Chapter 30:

The storm was coming in fast. I could feel it. Every single molecule in each cloud and in each bolt of lightning felt like it was a part of me. Not only that, but everything around me had an energy that brushed against my skin like a soft breeze but more tangible. Like, if I were to reach out, I could grab that energy.

“You’re wasting your time Cassandra,” Caine said.

My gaze was on him but I didn’t really see him. My eyes were focused inward to that burning core inside of me. Something had changed. I could feel my power there but I could also feel my mother’s. In my mind’s eye I saw a flash of her with her forehead pressed against mine and wind blowing our hair so that it tangled together. She’d done it, she’d given me her powers.

The same powers that had driven her totally insane.

“Awesome,” I muttered as I felt the storm come to a stop directly above us. There was an incredible amount of energy in it making my skin tingles go into overdrive.

“Cass?” I heard James say from a distance.

“Yeah?” I replied, my energy still focused inward.

“Please don’t die this time.”

My lips tugged up in a slight smile. “I don’t think I’m going to die. I might become bat shit crazy though. Sorry in advance.”

“That is enough!” Caine yelled and launched another attack at me which I brushed aside with a stray thought. My eyes focused outward again, seeing Caine for what he really was, a total psychopath.

“You’re right, Caine. It is enough. Enough of you, draining everyone around you, scaring people with your strength and threatening an apocalypse. If there’s going to be an apocalypse it’s going to be because we’ve emitted too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and nature is going to create a mega storm to fix it.”

“What?” Caine asked, a look of confusion mingling with his look of hatred and anger.

“Just ignore her, we usually do,” Jack piped up.

“No one asked you,” I snapped turning my head to Jack and he took a quick step back, genuine fear in his eyes. I gave an exasperated sigh. “I’m not going to kill you, Jack. Relax.”

“I am relaxed. Totally relaxed. It’s not like the creepy girl with pitch black eyes, hair that is literally crackling with electricity and is currently floating about a foot in the air is scary or anything. No, you’re not scary at all, Cass.” Jack had his hands up in front of him as he backed up a few more steps.

I glanced down to see that I was indeed floating a little above the ground. I grimaced and tilted my face towards the sky. “Don’t you think you went a little overboard?” I shouted at my mother.

No one answered.

Typical, the minute you need your spectral and malevolent mother, she’s not there to give you advice but she can just pop into your life whenever she wants and force mind breaking powers on you.

Parents.

I heard a low growl and turned to face Caine again. Oh right, I was in the middle of some terrible fight between good and evil. C’mon Cass, focus.

“Caine, I really don’t want to kill you,” I said.

“You don’t?” I heard Sam say but I ignored her.

“I don’t want to kill anyone, actually. I was kind of hoping we could end this with a sort of truce and maybe a nice little spell that will bind your powers. What do you say?” I gave him my most convincing and trustworthy smile.
