Chapter 15: Attack
Loki has taken to pacing throughout the night.
It's a habit that truly started when he'd been thrown in jail by Thor. He hadn't had a whole lot to do during his imprisonment, and had therefore spent most of his seemingly bottomless spare time pacing and worrying. Generally, he worried about Thea, whom he couldn't see to make sure she was all right. True, he had grown much more confident in her abilities after those months of her striking out on her own (not counting Videl) and learning to survive. But he couldn't help himself.
As of late, he paces not just for Thea. He also paces for himself. During those months when Neidra had owned his mind, he'd snapped in and out of the spell in a haze. And during those months right after, he'd wake up in a cold sweat as he'd remembered driving a sword through his daughter's heart over and over again. The scene would rewind again and again, playing in a loop to drive him into insanity. He and Thea both deal with the demons of their past, and although he knows she has squandered it enough to learn how to be a strong young woman, he is not always so confident in his own ability to make it through the maelstrom.
Tonight, he's not just pacing for Thea or himself.
He is pacing for Asgard.
While Thea and Videl had been capering behind his back, Loki had been searching the local villages. Self-admittedly, he'd been searching for clues about Marjoy or Eala– truthfully, he'd put too much hope and stock into Thea's idea that the three redheaded siblings are alive and holding back for some mysterious reason. But along the way, he'd grown worried about the grumblings from the villagers. The grumblings that didn't want him king, the griping that called him a traitor and a murderer. It's harder to shake off whispers when there are so many of them calling out your name.
It's chilly tonight, so Loki shuts the doors leading out to the balcony to keep out the wind. He stops pacing momentarily to lean against one of the four wooden posts on his bed. He looks up at the ceiling, then at the floor.
Suddenly, his bedroom door rattles. Beyond it, he hears a man shouting.
Loki crosses the door and opens it. One of the palace guards grips him by the shoulders. "My king, we are under attack! The palace is under siege, they are coming for you and your daughter!"
"Wha–?"
He's cut off when the man slumps and falls to the floor. When Loki holds up his hands, he sees they are stained with blood.
More shouting fills his ears, this time coming from the front of the palace. Loki runs across his bedroom and throws open the balcony door. He comes to a skidding stop at the marble rail and, gripping the edge, stares down.
The courtyard is full of torches and horses and the shouting of men and women. It's a massive, chaotic mess of cacophony. It doesn't take Loki long to spot Fjodr at the head of the mob, driving a sword through one of the guards. Beside him is Saissa, her white hair flowing around her white horse, her needle-like sword gripped tightly in her hand. The wind blows in Loki's hair, tossing around in the breeze, and the air is thick with heat and ...
Smoke.
And fire.
Loki watches in horror as the eastern section of the palace suddenly goes up in flames. The fire licks the ground, then spirals up the walls like crimson snakes.
