Beauty in the Bones: Season 1

Author's Note

"Beauty In The Bones" is the story of Silas Blane, the antagonist from my upcoming novel, "Ruby Descent". I started this project to develop his character and the settings, and also to define and refine the seldom explored SF sub-genre known as 'decopunk'. 'Zeerust' and retro-futuristic tropes rule this alternate fictional universe, which resembles our own in some ways. Zeerust is defined as things which were considered futuristic in the past--for example the chromed and streamlined rocketships in the old Flash Gordon series. Such things are technically impossible. But in an alternate universe, where these aesthetics work, nostalgia becomes a viable reality.

The story has since evolved into something all its own. It deviates from a typical novel, and is more like an ongoing TV series in format, with dramatic influences hailing to classic shows like "Downton Abbey" and "Dynasty". Film noir, German expressionist silent films like "Metropolis", vintage comics like Flash Gordon, Sky Captain, and Buck Rogers, and other old cinema greats have also provided inspiration.

Together with my short story, "Children of the War", and novel "Perfect World Somewhere", this story will detail the events leading up to the decimation of Earth on Black Sky Day, and the dangerous struggles faced by free society afterward. These three works form the "The Family Of Earth" series. The stories can be read in any order, and follow the same timeline at varying points. The characters will all face the final battle in my upcoming novel,"Ruby Descent", which should be ready to pitch in 2018.
