The winter arrived, and the evenings became dark and gloomier. In the valley, the mist was thicker and seemed more damp than usual.

The moisture got into one's throat nostrils, and it was no surprise that half the village, especially the children, came down with the flu.

But Jack seemed to be in good health. The damp had not affected his voice, nor had it chilled his bones to prevent him from strumming his banjo.
