Chapter 8

Marie returned home after going to see the nurse. Her arms were folded over her stomach in an uncomfortable gesture. Stein looked curiously at her as she entered the room. "How'd it go?" He asked, watching her move to the couch, his gaze protective. Almost all traces of the madness had disappeared, thanks to Marie's strong healing magic, and the help from the school nurse. The blond sat on the edge of the couch and took a deep breath before facing her boyfriend. "I'm pregnant." She whispered. His eyes widened, and the cigarette fell out of his mouth. He quickly stomped it out so the whole house wouldn't burn down. "Y-you're... What? how... We..." She smiled faintly at him. "Guess I'm out of work for a bit." After Stein recovered his composure, he swept Marie up in a bear hug. His heart was flying. But at the same time, he was terrified. "What if the child gets the madness? Will it be a weapon or a meister?" He was full of questions. "I don't know." Marie replied carefully. She was scared too. "Who will we tell first?!" He half shouted, rising from his seat to head for the door. "I was thinking Lord Death..." Stein nodded, and grabbed Marie's coat. "Come now, let's go tell him!" He helped his girlfriend into her coat and took her hand. 

When they reached Lord Death, he was staring at the ground of his office, not moving. "Is something wrong sir?" Marie asked him. He glanced up and bounced towards them. "Nothing at all! Just thinking. What can I do for my star teachers?" If they could see his face, Stein assumed it would have a huge grin on it. "We wanted to tell you that we are going to have a baby!" Marie cheered. Lord death squealed, uncharacteristically, and summonsed Maka and her friends to tell them.

"Does this mean you'll get married?" Maka asked Marie, who glanced at Stein. Stein smiled and got down on one knee. He held up a diamond ring and Marie nearly fainted. This was the best thing to happen to the academy in years, and a new student would be wonderful. The war was finally over, and the academy could rebuild its self, with the help of Death the Kid. 

Now Marie and Stein were both happy, and the madness would not return. "Do you know what the secrete to my madness was?" Stein asked his wife one night while she snuggled against him near the fire. Marie looked up at him with a happy smile on her face. "You." He whispered, and kissed her softly. Their little family was complete, and neither of them would ever look to the past.
