The Keeper of the Castle

My kingdom is protected by the monsters in my head,

Who will only stop defending when the darkness is dead.

They reinforce my crafted cage,

Prowling around with suppressed rage.

We keep each other close at night,

When the whispers hold more bite.

The words rattle and screech,

Delighting in dancing out of reach.

So we build the walls up ever higher,

In an effort to prevent things becoming dire.

Expand the forest and bless it with thorns,

Guard the skies with lightening storms.

But there is an inkling, a feeling that grows,

Slithering through my created foes.

Quick! Add another layer to the walls of stone,

Make sure the monsters are able to break bone.

Seal the doors and bolt the locks,

For time is withering on all the clocks.

And still the feeling ripples and spreads,

With every step that you tread.

Just when I'm on the edge,

Fingers grasping at the ledge,

You break down the door and march through the castle halls,

The monsters bowing at your beck and call.

I turn and there you are,

Covered in filth, blood and scars.

With my monsters purring at your feet,

The warmth rushes to my cheeks.

Because you're smiling like you've won the stars,

And it was worth it, this journey far.

You hold out your hand and I tentatively accept,

From then on it seems our fate was set.

I give you the key from around my neck,

Entrusting you with the kingdom I've tried to protect.

As I do, the layers crash and the thorns subside,

The high walls crumble in a rolling tide.

For you see, I constructed all this within my heart,

And you tore its guilded cage apart.

You revived love and I fell deep,

If I ask, can you I keep?

But if I share a secret, promise you won't tell?

These walls I built were not to keep you away,

But to see if you cared enough to stay.
