Mark's POV
I wandered around backstage aimlessly. Jack wanted to show me his costume, so I stayed after. I didn't mind, I didn't have any homework and I loved spending time with Jack.
"Oh I look so FABULOUS!" Jack shouted as he strut out of the dressing room. He was wearing kakis, a white and blue striped button up shirt, and grey suspenders. He posed in front of me and smiled, one hand on his hip and the other behind his head. I laughed and he giggled as he continued to pose.
"Jack, you're not even finished." Molly laughed as she walked out. She held a brown boy's wig and a pair of glasses. "Put these on and I'll go get your makeup." Jack took the wig and glasses and Molly walked back to the girl's dressing room.
"You have to wear makeup?" I asked as Jack looked at a mirror on his desk. Since he was in every play, usually as stage manager, he had his own desk backstage.
"Uh, yeah. Everybody in theatre does." Jack pulled out a box of pins and a wig cap.
"I didn't think the boys did..." I watched Jack pin the wig cap on his head.
"If you don't, it looks literally terrifying." Jack giggled once the cap was pinned to his hair. He slipped the wig over his head. It was a short, brown wig with little grey hairs scattered throughout.
"What does it look like?" I asked. Jack turned to face me. With the wig on he looked like a totally different person.
"Follow me." Jack took my hand. He helped me off the stage. I sat down in an audience chair. Jack went backstage and turned on a spotlight. He stood underneath the bright light and faced me.
"Oh." I laughed when I saw his face. It was completely white like paper, except his eyes were totally black. He looked like a ghost from a horror movie. "Okay, I've seen enough!" I looked away and Jack laughed.
"Jack! I need to do your makeup!" Molly called after him. Jack helped me back up on stage and turned off the spotlight. He sat down in a chair and Molly set up a box full of makeup. I watched her grab a light foundation and begin sponging it on Jack's face. Suddenly the boy's dressing room door swung open.
"Hey, Jack!" Felix walked out. Jack stayed still for Molly, but opened his eyes and looked to his friend.
"Nice leggings." He teased. I looked at Felix. He was wearing a tight black shirt, leggings, and jazz shoes.
"At least I can dance, piano nerd!" Felix laughed. He stepped closer and looked at Jack's wig. "Wow, it looks exactly like your old hair! They did a really good job on that custom wig."
"I know, it's wierd to see my hair like this again." Molly dusted powder on Jack's face and he had to close his eyes.
"You had grey hairs?" I asked.
"Last year, yeah. It runs in my family." Jack smiled, his eyes still closed. Molly pulled out a small bit of blush and barely dusted Jack's cheeks.
"Huh." I thought for a moment. I realized I hadn't even seen Jack until I met him backstage. I had only heard of him.
"Okay Jack, look up." Molly commanded. Jack opened his eyes and she started putting a small bit of mascara on his eyelashes. "Okay, done." She said once she was finished. Jack looked at the mirror and put on his glasses.
"Awesome! Thanks, Mol. Go get in costume before Ms. Jefferson yells at you." He slightly pushed Molly. She quickly walked off to the girl's dressing room.
Jack looked at me with his full costume and makeup. "So, how do I look?" He stood up.
"Awesome! I can't wait to see the show." I smiled brightly at Jack. Felix's eyes darted to Jack, and his smile wavered for a split second, but then he looked back to me as if nothing happened.
"Yeah, I hope you'll like it." Jack nodded. Molly stepped out of the dressing room. She was wearing a sparkly yellow crop top with a white under shirt and glittery black leggings. Her curly black hair was floofed up and she looked like some kind of pop star from the 80's. In her hand were cherry red high heels.
"Ugh, I don't want to put on these heels right now. They hurt my feet." She set them down on Jack's desk and sat down on his chair.
"I DO!" Jack squealed and pulled off his black dress shoes. He stepped into the heels and started posing like a model again.
"I swear, Jack likes high heels more than I do." Molly laughed as she watched Jack strut around.
"It's my dirty little secret." He giggled.
"Seriously, Mark, he can run in heels." Felix looked at me. My jaw dropped.
"Those heels are like 4 inches tall!" I watched Jack run back and forth, his heels clicking on the floor and his laughter echoing around the stage. "Jack, where the hell did you learn to do that?" I laughed as Jack begun dancing like an idiot.
"I don't know, natural talent, I guess." He giggled. Ms. Jefferson walked backstage and saw Jack in his heels. She just rolled her eyes and smiled like it happened all the time.
"Everyone! Dress rehearsal starts in 5 minutes!" She shouted so everyone could hear. Jack stepped out of his heels and handed them to Molly. He put back on his dress shoes and stood up.
"Hey, Mark, you might have to go." Jack said sadly. "You can come see the show later this week!" He said in a slightly more cheerful voice.
"It's okay, I understand. No spoilers, right?" I picked up my bag and headed for the stage exit.
"No spoilers." Jack waved as I stepped out the door.
