"There ya go, Pumpkin." Maleah smiled as she sat me in the front seat of my mom's white Impala. I was so happy to finally be going home. It felt like I had been in that hospital for weeks instead of days. "I gave your mom my number, just in case you needed anything." I nodded and buckled my seatbelt. "Thank you so much, Maleah. Ya know for everything."
"You're very welcome, Mrs. Ortega. But there's no need to thank me, its my job." Maleah was the most humble person I had ever met. I admired her for that. She gingerly hugged me goodbye and shut my door. "Let's go home." She started the car and pulled off onto the main highway.

When we pulled into our driveway, there was a black Escalade parked in front of our garage. The windows were tinted, and the license plate was blacked out. "I thought you guys were coming tomorrow..." Mom mumbled under her breath. "Come on, Isa. There's someone here that wants to talk to you."

2 men, around the same age, clad in black, 3 piece suits sat comfortably on our white leather sectional with a large stack of papers lying between them. "Reneé Ortega, my name is John Davis, this is my partner Carlus Baker."
"Isabella, go upstairs." The two men averted their gaze to me. They didn't smile, or wave, or even blink for that matter. I ran up the stairs and crouched by the wall near the railing. 'Why are they here?' They each shook my mom's hand and once again took their seat.

"I'm sure you already knew this but." John paused took a sip from his small water bottle. Come on, drag ass, spit it out. He licked his lips and continued. "The FBI is placing you and your daughter in protective custody effective immediately. We are relocating you until we catch D-- him." he corrected himself.

'They haven't caught him.' my chest tightened at the thought that he's still out there, looking for me. "I see. Where to?" her tone was blunt, emotionless. "California." Carlus added. California???? Are they serious????

"When do we leave?"
"As soon as you pack."
"Isa isn't going to handle this well. This town is all she's ever known."
"She will adjust, don't worry."
I hope he's right.
"The sooner you pack, the sooner we can leave. You will also receive new identities."
When I heard mom's flats clack against the floor, I bolted for my room.

"Isa we need to talk." she down on the edge of my bed with a creak. "We have to leave." I furrowed my brows, pretending to be surprised. "We leave as soon as we pack." I simply mouthed 'oh'. "Come on, amour. Lets get you packed up."

The agency took care of our plane tickets and before we knew it, we were in Cali, leaving LAX in the backseat of a government car. Honestly, I was terrified to leave Washington but I understood that this was all necessary for mom's, as well as my safety. I sighed and slumped against mom's sleeping body. Soon, sleep overtook me as well and I was out cold.

Meanwhile...

"You can't keep her hidden away forever, Viv." I snarled as I hastily threw my truck into gear and sped away from their now almost vacant home. "I'll find her. No matter what you do, I will."
