The demon mall cop headed up the steps from the basement, a book tucked safely under his arm. He looked over his shoulder at the dusty elevator with out of service illuminated in red above its metal door and smiled.
Humans were so oblivious he thought.
Then he continued across the mall towards the staff locker room. Bert was already there ready to take over from the night shift – slumped in a tired arm chair flicking through his newspaper.
"What's that you're reading there?" he asked, taking a sip of his coffee.
The demon mall cop held up his book.
"Inferno – Dante," he said.
"That the one about Hell and all that?"
The demon mall cop nodded his head.
"Did you know the 8th ring of Hell is reserved for thieves?" he said.
Bert shrugged, uninterested.
"Any problems tonight?" he asked.
The demon mall cop smiled – his eyes cold.
"Couple of kids shoplifting," he replied. "They took a lipstick. Don't worry - I don't think they'll be bothering us again."
Bert shrugged again and went back to his paper.
The demon mall cop signed out and headed towards the exit of the mall – along the white tiled floor, and down the escalators.
On the way he stopped at a sign in the mall window and smiled as he read it:
Shoplifters are always prosecuted it said.
