the questioning of the muse

love i've been thinking
about Beatrice and Dante
(do you know he hailed her as the epitome of beatific vision?
just a look into her eyes and you saw the face of God.)
good old Dante and his muse,
visionary of light, love, purity.
(do you know they met only twice?
i see you everyday.)
just two meetings and a life long love.
(it has been three years.)
not enough substance so he concocted
a woman fit for the heavens,
wrote her an epic trilogy God would be proud of.
(i have known your substance; i have smelt your scent on my hair.)
maybe one day I'll meet you, flash-quick,
on a florentine street, and you'll think me
something divine.
(i know i have long seen saints in your face.
when will my love be reciprocated?)
when my mother was young she was not allowed to read the Book of Revelations because it bore too much truth.
(have i lost my visionary in reality? have my revelations struck me?)
