Chapter 23

The secret behind him

Last week was a bliss for the both of us. Andami naming lugar na pinuntahan around New York. I discovered the places I never knew existed.

Back to work kami ngayong week. I woke up with an empty space on my left. He left early in the morning at nakapagtataka dahil hindi niya ako ginising.

Kinukulit parin ako ng malikot kong curiosity about Theo's full name. I decided to give it a try na baka sakaling sagutin ako ni Mrs. Olive.
It's funny after all these years of relationship with him, I barely know his secrets. He's secretive. Dr. Theo Monteréal isn't new to dark and painful past.

Nakaupo ako sa kitchen island at humahanap ng tiyempo kung kailan siya tatanungin. Maybe when she's busy, then, that's the time she'll get confused and answer me question.

" Mrs. Olive, can I ask you something?" I asked her while she's busy chopping.

Hindi na niya ako tinapunan ng tingin "  Sure " she said.

" Do you know Theo's full name? "
Napahinto siya sa paghahati ng mga gulay. Halatang nagulat siya sa katanungan ko at pumunta sa harap ko.

" Yes " biglang bumagsak ang mukha ko, buti pa siya alam niya.

Naramdaman kong may kamay na humawak sa balikat ko.

" Maybe he is needing time to tell you. Theo has a dark past. I was there when those things happened. You have to wait for him to open it up to you without you forcing him, "

" Please bear with him. When he met you, I saw the Theo that I used to know, the carefree one " she said and smiled.

Maybe I am too curious and persistent. Maybe he's giving himself a time to tell me those things. I hope so.

Nawalan ako ng ganang pumasok sa school. Ayaw kong dalhin ang ganitong ugali ko habang nagtuturo. Nangako kasi si Theo na sasabihin saakin ang sikreto niya kapag nabuo niya na ang tiwala niya at nagkaroon na siya ng time.

Hindi niya parin ba sinasabi saakin, dahil ba hindi niya parin ako mapagkatiwalaan?

" Here " inilahad saakin ni Mrs. Olive ang pagkain ko, itinabi ko ito.

" I'm not hungry " sabi ko.

Huminga siya ng malalim
" Is it because of the secret? "

" Why he can't trust me enough? "

" Maybe he is trusting you but he doesn't want to you to know his dark past. He doesn't want pity out of anybody, Sapph, "

" You do have to understand that he is a broken man and there you are, picking up his broken pieces and putting it back together "

Para akong sinampal sa mga sinabi ni Mrs. Olive saakin. But still, ang persistent ko na sabihin na saakin ni Theo but he always say 'In time, Sapph. '

I am desperate to know the truth, I may look bad dahil pinipilit ko siyang sabihin ang sikreto niya but lagi nalang siyang nangangako in time tapos ang tagal na di niya parin nasasabi, ano to pangako ng mga politiko?

I am trying to gain his trust, maybe kapag sinabi niya saakin ang sikreto niya malalaman ko nang pinagkakatiwalaan niya ako.

We've been together for years, for goodness' sake. A relationship won't last without trust.

Buong hapon nasa kwarto lang ako, I didn't even bother to eat breakfast or lunch. Nakatingin lang ako sa view galing sa glass wall na nasa harap ng kama namin, ang pader namin sa harapan ay glass kaya kitang-kita ang siyudad ng New York City.
