I don't understand. Honestly, what did I ever do to get her so mad at me? Does she think I haven't noticed how annoyed she got when we had so many of the same classes? She wasn't exactly being subtle, you know.

I mean, sure I didn't talk to her when she came over to meet us on Saturday. But she didn't talk to me either, and in my defense, I'm not exactly an outgoing person. It's not my fault.

I ended up enjoying the one period I had without her just as much as she probably did, because I didn't have to sit there seeing her obvious annoyance at having so many classes with me. Seriously, you'd think I wanted all this.

I didn't even want to move to Portland! I had lived in Seattle all my life, and then my mom got a new job offer and we just left Washington behind for Oregon. And really, if we had to move, could it not be a city that didn't get almost as much rain as Seattle?

At first when Mom said some new neighbors were coming over to meet us, I had been excited. I was relieved that another girl my age lived right next door, and I wanted to meet her. Then the Porters came over, and my shyness immediately took over.

Next thing I know, Riley supposedly hates me.

I was sitting in my new room thinking about all of this as I stared blankly at the cardboard boxes that hadn't been unpacked yet, when Mom called from downstairs.

"Addie!" she shouted. "Addie, get down here!" Sighing, I complied and hurried down to the kitchen, where Mom was busy pouring glasses of lemonade for some reason.

"What?" I asked expectantly.

"I need you to put out a plate of some of those chocolate-chip cookies I baked earlier," Mom said.

"Why?" I asked.

"Riley's coming over."
