ALEXS POV:

"Fuck, fuck, fuck." I mumbled when I reached for my phone, and remembered dropping it on the cement earlier. Now I had the love of my life dying in a trash can, and no way to call 911. I quickly ran through all of my options. "Well, all I can do is run back to the restaurant and get on a phone." right as I was about to sprint away, I remembered that Melinda was here. "I can't leave her..." and with that I grabbed the entire can and hurtled toward the front enterance

MELINDA'S POV:

My world was dark, a pitch black senseless world. Words were meaningless. Thoughts smiled through my mind like holding water in your hands. Nothing happened, no memory, no color, no nothing. Pain, love, and fear were gone. I was gone........

Pain! Light and color flooded back to me, leaving me floundering, a fish out of water. Sounds swirled in through my ears, and snippets of memory returned. And pain. Soooo much pain. The kind of pain that makes you wish for submission, crave that dark senselessness, beg for death.

Vision returned to me. What I saw kept me pressing on, fighting the need to let go. I saw an angel, my angel. Something was wrong though. I saw him through a silver hole, like I was at the bottom of a canyon, and he was millions of miles away. His face was contorted in sorrow, maybe, or grief. It hurt to see the angel look so sad. I wanted to reach up, comfort the angel, tell him it was ok. But my arms were made of lead, my mouth filled with cotton. No! I fought harder, this was important! My mind was slipping, my thoughts running together. Darkness began to fill my eyes. I had to stay awake! There was something I had to do.... But even now, I felt myself falling farther and farther into the black, until everything was gone....

ALEXS POV:

I jumped into the restaurant, still carrying Melinda in the silver metal garbage can. I set it down and leaped at the first waiter I saw. "I need to use your phone, NOW!"

The ambulance had rushed down to pick up Melinda. I saw a couple of EMT's jump strap Mel on a gurney before wheeling her into the back. I ran to hop in with her, but was stopped by a police officer.

"Sir, im afraid I'm going to have to ask you some questions." he told me, blocking my path.

"Not now, my girlfriend is fucking dying there, and you want to ask me some fucking QUESTIONS??!!" I dodged him and managed to jump in the ambulance before it took off.

The ride to the hospital seemed to last forever. The EMT's stood working over Melinda, stitching up her head so she wouldn't bleed to death. The two men tied the last stitch, then leaned back and nodded. "That's all we can do for her until we get to the hospital." one of them, a man with short, curly brown hair, informed me. I nodded unsurely, sitting on the edge of my seat, holding Melinda's cold hand.

When we arrived at the hospital, Mel was rushed into the emergency ward. I, however, was stopped when I tried to follow them into the operating room.

"She'll have to go to surgery immediately," the nurse at the frot desk explained," you won't be able to see her until she comes out." I muttered my very choice swear words and kicked the wall, instantly regretting it when the pain shot up my toe.

"Goddamn oak desk...." I grumbled as I decided what to do next. I supposed I should probably call everyone and tell them what was happening. I walked back up to the front desk lady and asked, as ever politely as I could, to borrow her telephone.

Half an hour later the whole group was sitting in the waiting room, looking unbearably nervous. There was am uneasy mumur going through the rest of the patients waiting there, big groups tended to make people nervous. However, within our group it was dead silent. You could bear a pin drop on the carpeted floor. Everyone was waiting for that fateful name........

"Alex Gaskarth?" a nurse wearing a pink Teddy bear shirt approached me. "You may see Melinda now."

On the way to the room the nurse filled me in on everything that happened. "Melinda had a very shaky surgery, and is currently on life support." I drew in a shaky breath, already nervous to hear the rest. "The doctors were able to stop the bleeding, and she has a broken leg and arm, and a couple of broken ribs." I let go of my breath, things didn't sound too bad.... "Un fortunately," the nurse continued, making my heart stop in it's tracks. "When one of her ribs broke, the bone splintered, and a piece flew off and pun ureter her heart. The doctors were able to do a heart transplant, but they still do t know if she'll make it." the nurse looked up to me, pity in her eyes. "I'm so sorry." the nurse left, letting me go into the room when I was ready. I took a deep breath, and opened the door.

Inside was Melinda, laying on a bed with railings and wheels, wearing a hospital gown. She had so many IV tubes hooked up to her, I could barely see her through the web of tubes. I knelt down next to her, and took her hand. "Oh Melinda," I whispered, "I'm so sorry. This is all my fault."

I stared at her face, and went on talking. "You deserve someone better then me. Someone who won't have to leave for six month tours. Someone who will treat you right all the time, and will always be there for you." I sucked in a breath, struggling to finish the sentence. "Domeone who won't leave you by yourself in a parking lot at night." I finished, my voice barely audible. It wasnt until then that I noticed a weird noise in the room, a kind of buzzing sound. I looked around to see where it was coming from, and noticed the monitor in the corner. I saw the screen, my entire being froze.

Melindas heart had stopped beating.
