We try to look lighter.
We try to look darker.
Why?
What drives us to alter our skin?
Is it the comments that are made,
That make us want to change?
Or is beauty our quest?
Are we trying to reach that ideal shade,
That society has deemed the best?
But we are society.
So should not each person,
Be happy with their shade.
For skin should be inconsequential,
Nothing to be ashamed of,
Nothing to alter.
But no,
We darken,
Or we lighten.
Instead of loving it,
And leaving it alone.
