On the bus to my aunt's today, I got a phone call, and, despite an urge to reject the social offering, I picked up.

"X? Hi. Wait, this is Xavier, right?"

I couldn't respond; my words choked me.

"Look, I know you probably don't recognize my voice. Damn, you've never even heard it."

But the voice belonged to a girl, one who sent notes through the night sky, a song for me alone.

"Hello? ... I guess you're not there, then."

          But I was there.

And I didn't say a single fucking word.
