Ella woke to find George gone.

A note remained in his place.

She picked up the piece of paper and unfolded it. She wasn't the greatest reader, but she soon was able to make out the words on the page.

My dearest Ella,

When you find this note, I'll be gone. You are my North Star. You have given me light and guidance since the day we first met and my heart beats for you.

Which is why I must leave.

They're after me, Ella. They're going to find me and, eventually, I'll be hanged for the crimes they think I've committed. I cannot lead you down that path again so it is with a heavy heart I bid you farewell.

Farewell Ella, my love. Perhaps we'll meet again, in another life.

—George.
