"I don't know what you're talking about. It's impossible. What revenge? Ha. Why would I want to do that? Not that it matters, but that ain't even enough to cover the amount of emotional damage he caused. I should just-"
Kwan Du's arched eyebrows brought me straight back to earth. I should just... I should just stop talking. I press my lips together. Me and my big mouth.
"Should?" He prompted. "What are you planning?"
"Goodnight, Boss." I quickly bow, diving into my blankets quickly.
"This kid." Kwan Du chuckle. "Inform me beforehand, or I'll have your head if I have to clean up after you."
And the lights went out.
Should I really go back home? Thinking of how Mum smashing the soju bottle- I'll think about it next time.
'Next time' easily got swept under the rug for three years as I drift overseas.
'Next time' arrived like a bout of flu, swift and sudden.
I missed the call. Mum was in the emergency room then, fighting for her life while I was rehearsing for a concert in China. I never knew until I reached back to the hotel.
"Mum's undergoing surgery right now, I don't know what exactly happened but her condition isn't good. Odile, she might not make it. Come home, Odile. Now. No more excuses." Hailey's voice left no room for negotiation and she ended the call.
I have to go. How? What am I going to do if Mum dies as well? Mum, you can't die!
I need my passport. No, I can't panic now. What do I need? I... I... Passport, I'll need that. Where is it? No, I need to book a ticket first.
A firm hand grips my shoulder and spun me on me around, making me drop my phone.
"What's wrong?" Kwan Du asked. Since when did he come in?
"Mum." I reply automatically, and I could feel my brain slowly working its way through a surreal fog as the reality sinks in. "My mum is dying. I have to go."
This was really happening. I can't lose Mum.
"And give up right now? Are you insane?" Kwan Du looked at me incredulously. He looked as though he wanted to say something else.
It's impossible. Millions of dollars were invested in this concert. I can't abandon it.
"SHE'S DYING!" I screech.
"Are you a doctor? " Kwan Du stepped forward and his voice deepened. "You can't do anything to improve the situation, Odile. What are you going to do when you get there? Sit and wait with your siblings while our concert goes bust here? While we clean up after the mess you'll make? Do you understand the situation you're in?"
Warm tears rolled down my face, scorching my cheeks with my frustration.
"You said you were on a mission to get your family out of bankruptcy. You're almost there, Odile. Almost. Don't go. At least not like this. I'm sorry to be so cruel right now, but you can't go yet, Odile. Please, just two more days."
"I can't. I can't handle this." I shake my head. I'm tired of all this.
"I'll book the first flight after the concert. We can only pray for good news, Odile. There's nothing you can do at this moment other than that. Leave that job to the doctors. There's nothing you can do but wait and pray."
"I know."
The only thing I can do is pray.
Who am I: Hailey
It's been two days since the call.
"Second Sis isn't coming is she," Jack said. It wasn't a question, but a confirmation. "Big Sis, has she abandoned us?"
"Second Sis won't." Will immediately defend Odile.
"She would. Who is she right now? She's rich, famous and in demand. Why would she come back." Jack frowned. "Who knows, she probably doesn't even want to come back-"
"Shut up." I cut him off. "You don't know anything."
"I don't know anything?" Jack stood up. "Yes, I don't. Then why don't you explain what's going on?! We aren't kids, Big Sis, we've grown up!"
"Jack..."
"Don't you 'Jack' me, Will. Don't tell me you don't feel the same." Jack snapped at Will. "I've had enough of all this. If not for you, Will, I wouldn't have continued cutting her articles out. If she doesn't want anything to do with us, then fine by me as well!"
A sudden noise brought all of us to our feet and my body automatically dashed right for Mum. Something has happened to Mum. One of the many pieces of equipment was blaring out loud alarmingly. I pressed the emergency button with all my strength. In a flurry of activity, the three of us were physically pushed away from Mum as the curtain was drawn around her bed.
"If anything happens to Mum, I won't ever forgive Second Sis." Jack sounded like he was on the verge of a breakdown.
As the saying goes: it never rains but pours.
Feeling my phone vibrate,I excuse myself outside to pick up the call. I don't register what Boss shouted through the phone, but I heard three words very clearly: You are fired.
It was as though someone had vacuumed my brain out of my skull. Sol Mi picked me up in the evening for work and I forced myself into the character numbly. This was the last session for me. I would be jobless after this. No upcoming acting assignments, no store to work at. I would really be jobless.
If I hadn't gone according to Sol Mi's wish, if I hadn't tried to be a little indulgent, would I have been able to retain that job? I would probably have been still able to work at the store.
I hate this situation; I hate the burden and stress I'm feeling; I hate Odile.
