"Skye, I have something to tell you," Nathan said as he walked into the living room with two cups of tea. He placed them both on the coffee table then sat down beside Skye on the sofa. She looked at him expectantly and he flashed her a smile that didn't quite reach his eyes.
"I need you to know that I love you. I've never been in love with someone before. This is going to sound really cheesy but you make me want to be a better person. You're so special and I get to see you every day. That's what makes this so hard," Nathan explained. Skye looked worried now, wondering what he was talking about.
"Makes what hard?" she asked. Nathan closed his eyes for a moment as he plucked up the courage to tell her. "I'm leaving," he said simply. Skye stared at him for a moment, trying to calculate his words. "You're leaving?" she questioned. "Yes. I'm going back to England on Wednesday." Skye stayed silent, unsure of what to say next. "W-why?" she stuttered, becoming upset. "It's complicated," Nathan replied, his tone barely holding any emotion.
"It's complicated?" Skye questioned while shaking her head, "then please explain to me why you're just leaving the country. Please tell me why you're only saying this to me a few days before you go. Tell me why the fuck you expect me to be okay with you leaving me!"
Nathan ran a hand through his hair, struggling to find a way to deal with her reaction as Skye stood up and started pacing. "Princess," he started. "Don't fucking 'princess' me!" she snapped. "I get that you're angry, Skye, but-"
"Angry?! Angry doesn't even come close, Nathan! I'm devastated! I love you and you're leaving me! I've given up so much for you. I hardly ever see my friends and my mum anymore! How can you do this to me?!" she yelled while tears rolled down her cheeks. Nathan stood up and walked over to her. "Get away from me!" she protested as Nathan held her in his arms. She was banging on his chest and crying her eyes out.
"I hate you. You can't leave me. I need you. Don't do this to me, Nathan. Please," she cried as Nathan sank to the ground. He held her close to him as she sobbed. "I hate you," she repeated but there was no truth behind her words, Nathan knew that. He knew this would be hard but he never imagined that it would break his heart as much as this.
"Please," Skye breathed. Nathan rubbed his thumb over her arm soothingly. He didn't say a word as she continued to cry. He just held her in his arms because he knew that soon he wouldn't be able to do that. She was the only thing left here for him. But he had to go back to England. He had to leave her. No one had ever meant so much to him other than his parents.
"You said that nobody wanted you there though. You said that you couldn't go back because it would put your dad in danger," Skye reasoned as she tried to control her sobs, desperate for Nathan to stay. "It's a lot more complicated than that, Skye," Nathan replied and kissed her forehead. She didn't say anything further. She just sat in Nathan's hold, wishing that he would never have to let go of her. "I'm so sorry," Nathan whispered as they fell into a silence.
Two days had passed by since Nathan had told Skye about him leaving and she hadn't left his side since. She refused to spend any time without him because that was one less second that she couldn't make up for in the future. It was Monday and she knew that he'd be gone soon.
"My mum says she'll drive you to the airport on Wednesday," Skye told Nathan as she traced patterns on his chest with her finger. "Great," he replied with as much enthusiasm as he could manage. As the days went by he found himself needing to spend more and more time with Skye. But he knew that their time was limited and that soon he'd be saying goodbye forever. His heart was breaking more and more every day because he fell harder for her every day. She was his sunshine and if she was taken away then what did he have left?
"Please stay," Skye whispered. They both knew the answer to the question that Skye had asked every hour since she was told that Nathan was leaving. "I wish I could," he replied. "Why can't you?" she asked. Nathan sighed deeply. He was becoming tired of having the same conversation over and over. "I can't tell you," he said for what felt like the tenth time today. "Why? What's the big secret?" Skye questioned, once again. Normally, Nathan would stay quiet and not answer her question but this time he felt the need to say something.
"If you knew why I'm leaving it would only make it harder for you. All I ever wanted to do was protect you," Nathan explained but it seemed that he was the one that was hurting her most. And the real kick in the teeth was that when he was gone, Skye would end up back where she was before him. It would be like he never existed. She'd probably end up dating Jace and he hated the thought of her being with someone else. She was all his. But he had to let her move on with her life no matter how much that hurt him. Skye could never do any wrong in his eyes but she had made one big mistake in her life. Something that she could never take back. Something that she could only cover up and pretend didn't happen.
Her biggest mistake was him.
