Nirvana’s parents are the first ones to arrive at the hospital, her mother rushed through the hospitals sliding doors, nearly terrifying the nurse, and demanding a numerous amount of orders and instructions, she tells the nurse all of nirvanas allergies and preferences for her hospital room when she leaves the operating room.
I try and hide my face underneath my hoodie; I keep my head low and stare at the ground, avoiding making any eye contact with the momster whatsoever.
If I look into Melissa Harte’s eyes, it would only wreck me. It would be like being hit by an unstoppable wrecking ball. Melissa’s eyes, much like nirvana’s eyes, look like they are charged with electricity, you can see swirls of grey and green in their mainly blue eyes, it’s terrifying how similar they are, the only differences between nirvana and her mother happen to be her jaw line and her cheekbones. Where nirvana has sharp cheekbones, Melissa has soft, round cheeks, and where nirvanas jaw is angular and dominant; her mother’s jaw is soft and not very strong.
Nirvanas mom sees me and rushes over to me, she storms past the startled nurse, with her faithful and patient husband, mike, by her side.
Melissa reaches me and nearly explodes, she tries to contain her pain and anger that are both clear as day in her eyes, but she fails miserably.
“What the hell were you doing standing out there in the middle of the road, Alex zodiac Harrison, you nearly killed my baby! Why the hell would you do that? Did you suddenly forget how to move your legs? She’s in surgery, Alex, SURGERY. My baby is in surgery and it’s your entire fault” she screams at me, she also grabs my shoulders and shakes me violently, her face is so red that I think steam would start coming out of her ears.
Melissa pounds her dainty fists against my chest and continues letting her anger out, mike goes along with it, and we both know that she needs to get it out of her system before she can think clearly.
“What have we ever done to you Alex? I’ve treated you as if you were my own son! I brought you soup when you were sick and made you hot cocoa when you couldn’t sleep because of your parents. You were supposed to be good for her and she was supposed to be good for you too but you might’ve killed her, her state is critical! Do you understand what that means? No, don’t answer that!” she’s still pounding against my chest, I don’t do anything, mike tries pulling her back but it doesn’t work.
What she said was true, the Harte’s basically adopted me after they found out what my home life was like. I had money, we both had money, but I didn’t have parents. My mother and my father both thought they could replace their presence with cars, clothes, electronics, and so on but no expensive crap could ever fill their empty hole. Or so I thought until I started spending more time around the Harte’s.
I do nothing but wrap my arms tightly around Melissa Harte, she fights me at first but I persistently tighten my hold around her until she calms down, it’s a trick nirvana taught me, when someone is freaking out and is in hysterics the best thing you could do is hug them, just hold them so tightly to you, it does wonders.
Melissa gives into me and starts crying heavily against my chest, nearly collapsing on the floor, she screams on and on, sobbing hysterically and uncontrollably. I hug her and she hugs me back and we stay that way until she calms down and looks at me with her sad blue eyes.
“I’m sorry Alex, you know I love you.” she pauses and I nod. “Are you okay? Did anything happen to you?” I shake my head.
“Doctor asked for a scan but there are far more dire patients in need of scans so I’m at the end of the list, waiting for my turn.” I answer, the three of us sit down and I offer them my comforting chips and chocolate bars.
“Do you feel okay? Are you dizzy or anything?” she asks, turning into her usual momma bear self.
Mike and Melissa might just be the cutest couple on the planet, they are what nirvana and I aspire to be. They met in high school because of some play, she was sleeping beauty and her prince charming completely disappeared just when he  was supposed to kiss her so mike was pushed out on stage and was told to kiss Melissa. He protested at first but eventually went for it and when Melissa opened her eyes and saw that it was mike that kissed her, she smiled.
They’ve been together ever since. Melissa is chaotic, loud, destructive, rude, bold, and brave while mike is the calm in her storm, he keeps her grounded and lets her ride out her waves of anger, he doesn’t try and stop her when she stands up for things she believes in. they were even arrested together in college because Melissa has no boundaries and mike is her partner in crime, he never wavers or fails to be right by her hot-headed side.
I watch as mike reaches out and holds Melissa’s shaky hands, he puts his arm around her and she automatically lays her head on his extended arm, as if she was always meant to, like nothing in this world would comfort her more than laying her head against mikes arm.
I mouth thank you to mike after he calms Melissa down with just one touch and he smiles back at me as if saying ‘no problem’. I never realized this, but people shouldn’t fear Melissa, they should fear mike. He is the underdog, the one that is always in Melissa’s shadow but that depends on how you look at them. I think they are two shadows standing next to each other. Mike is far more dangerous  than  Melissa, he doesn’t blow up constantly the way Melissa does, he lets it all build up until he reaches a certain point where he explodes, wiping out everyone and everything around him.
I mean I’ve never actually seen him blowup but from what I heard it’s quite catastrophic.
