Even on my own wedding day, I didn't feel as rushed and as nervous as I did at this precise moment.
My morning started with excitement, but as the time passed me by, I became nervous and anxious. The previous night, I had gotten all of my sketch books out of my suitcase that I had taken to my dad's and all of the pencils I needed ready in my pop's office for the meeting with Lita.
But everyone knows something just has to go wrong on a very important day.
I began to desperately search for my material book through all of the suitcases I took. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything-- Not even a scrap of leather or velvet.
"Ma." Sophia cooed, waving around her bib.
I hid my frustration and smiled at her as she entered the room. "What's the matter, baby? Are you hungry?"
Randy followed behind her eating a Popsicle. "She's sharing with me... What are you looking for?" He asked, leaning against the door frame.
"My fucking material book! Lita's going to be here in two hours and I'm seriously shitting it. I don't know where I left it and I'm so sure I brought it..."
"Maybe it's at your house." It then dawned on me that maybe I never really took it to my dad's-- That I left it back at Brian's house. "Ta da..." Randy sung. "I solved the mystery."
"Ta-da!" Sophia mimicked.
Our eyes widened hearing those noises. I gasped. "What did you just say?"
She smiled, "Ta-da!" She sung again, picking at the clothes I had piled on the ground.
"Oh my God, I taught her something. I'm the best uncle in the world! I taught her the next few sounds in her vocabulary!" He shouted, acting ever so proud. He bent over and picked her up off the ground, planting a kiss on her cheek. "Wow. This is amazing. I should be like a baby-whisperer or some shit."
"Enough with the cussing. I don't need her to learn what shit means at just thirteen months old please. Thank you."
He laughed, "Who cares! Look who her parents are. You both curse like sailors to start with. Ten bucks says you're going to get called to her school because she said shit on her first day."
"Whatever, Randall." I remarked, slamming the suitcase shut. "I need that book... I have to go back home and get it."
"What about Brian?"
"He's the least of my worries today-"
"And what about the show? That's today too. It should be one of your biggest worries."
I rolled my eyes, forcing myself off my knees. "Like I said, this is my job we're dealing with. If I don't have that book, I don't have a very wealthy client on my hands. Take care of Sophia for me, please. I'll be back like in an hour, give or take. And do not, I repeat, do fucking not go into dad's office. All of my design crap is down there and the last thing I need right now is for you to mess anything up."
He scoffed, feeding Sophia a piece of the strawberry Popsicle. "Trust me, the last place I want to be is in dad's office. Have fun facing reality."
"Bite me!" I shouted, running down the stairs.
Though everything that Randy said didn't hit me til I actually arrived home, I made it a point to forget about it and get what I needed.
As I approached the door to what was once a house shared by Brian and I, I felt my hands become sweaty. I wasn't sure if I should knock or just enter. I mean, certainly I paid half of the mortgage, it was my house as much as it was his. But due to our situation, I didn't know if I could just walk in there like I owned the place.
