Unfair Sweetheart

Chapter 3

I'm doing my assignments when I saw a piece of pink paper that is so familiar to me. The invitation for Ms. Xavier that I don't have any plans to join.

I have the face but I don't want to be known as one of the girls with beautiful face I want to be more than that so without second thought I threw the paper in the trashbin near me.

And then the white envelope from Maggie appear inside my bag. Maggie is a 3rd year college student she's one of a scholar student in Mike's family scholarship program at Xavier U, mag kabatch sila ni Maxx at Maggie and unfortunately same course but different section of course our school seperate the scholar from non scholar.

Maggie is our family secret.

I remember I was six when I met her, I'm wearing my pink ballet outfit outside the gate waiting for my driver to pick me when I saw this skinny little girl peeking inside our house and when I asked her what she's doing she looked at me from head to toe with envy. I thought she was a daughter of my nanny because my nanny said she had a daughter living near the village.

But she said she was looking for her Papa, Mr. Bober is the last name. Even in my young age I know my family secret, it was a hush hush story of our maids that I heard. I looked at her intently mas kamukha pa nya si Daddy because unfortunately I get my genes from my Mom Latina ancestor.

Kinuha ko ang sobreng walang laman sa drawer ko, its been a routine to me. Pag may iaabot si Maggie para kay Daddy bubuksan ko at binabasa, ilalagay sa sobreng binibili ko sa bookstore.

I read the paper inside the envelope. It's a medical bill so I heard her Mother was very ill sabi ni Mary na nag volunteer sa ospital ng school namin sa St. Therese kaya alam nyang nandun naka admit ang Mama ni Maggie. And there's additional seprate letter.

Mr. Bober baka po may scholarship program kayo? Pwede po kaya akong mag apply? Nawala po kasi ako sa scholarship ng Leehong foundation at last seem ko na lang po ngayon dun, medyo nahirapan po kasi akong pagsabayin ang pag aaral at pagtratrabaho at pag babantay ka Nanay.

Naawa ako yes, Naiinis ako yes. Why? I don't know nagpapaawa sya sa Daddy ko yes she's my Dad responsibilty but not her Mom.

I went to my parents study room. Nakabukas ang pinto kaya sumilip ako, I saw them discussing about something and then laughing they look perfect but when I was 10 years old they almost broke up. My Mom filed an annulment and that was the time I feel something not good about Maggie because she almost tear my family I almost grow up without parents.

"Hey princess." My Dad saw me peeking outside.

I smile and sit on the vacant chair beside them without a word I give the white envelop.

The room filled with silence you can only hear the blowing of aircon.

And I hear my Mom sighed.

"So what she need this time?" To answer her I just shrug as if I didn't know the letter content.

Napagusapan namin na pagtungkol sa kanya paguusapan namin as a whole family. Binuksan na ni Mommy ang sulat at ayon nga the bill and her scholarship request.

Tahimik lang si Daddy pati si Mommy parang nagpapakiramdaman sila. So I start the conversation.

"I know we have a reponsibilty to her but Daddy kailangan po ba talaga nating bayaran ang hospital bill ng Mama nya?"

I saw the smile playing on my Mom lips.

"But we can help her with the scholarship though." I add.

"But we don't have scholarship program princess." My Dad remind me abruptly as if remembering that we spend millions on one of X.U buildings, its a donation from my family for the school and the building name is Bober by the way which is my biggest concern, kasi sa twing dadaan ako the student will stare at me as if saying I own the entire building and I hate it.

"Yes but I have this." Pinakita ko sa kanila ang recognition ko na binigay ng principal namin kanina. "I can get the scholarship that they were offering me and give it to her."

My dad read the content of my recognition letter and I saw a fleeting proudness on his face while my Mom just shrug as if alam nya nang mangyayari na marerecognize talaga ako.

"Okay so the scholarship is done but let me tell you one thing I don't want to spend a penny on her mother." Umirap pa ang Monmy ko pagkasabi nya nun.

"Mom they don't have money and 30 thousand is nothing to us." I remind her gentle. May sasabihin pa sana si Mommy pero inunahan na sya ni Daddy.

"I have an idea we can stage their concern on this one politician who owe us."

Napatango si Mommy na parang nagustuhan ang suggestion ni Daddy. I know this is the end of our discussion so I exit myself at pumunta na sa kwarto ko.

"Maxx." I uttered in shock.

Nasa kwarto ko na sya and pacing back and forth.

"Goodness Sweetheart, what happen? Why are you in principal's office? Ayaw sagutin ni Mike yung c.p nya kaya di ko alam ang nangyari sayo."

Good God, please tell me why I shouldn't fall for him?

"Maxx its because of this." Naglungkot lungkutan ako habang inaabot ko yung papel na binigay sakin ng principal. Na lalo naman nyang pinag-alala.

Binasa nya ang nakasulat at ngumiti.

"Wow! Out of hundred student ikaw ang top achiever?" I nod in response unable to form a word seeing his reaction is so overwhelming na para bang okay lang na hindi masaya ang Mommy for me, dinoble ni Maxx ang saya ko by his overly proud face.

"Halika punta tayo sa bahay matutuwa si Mama May nito."

Hinila nya na ako papunta sa bahay nila I told you his family care too much for me specially his mother. There was a time nga na nag wish ako na sana sya na lang ang Mommy ko but I erase that thought kasi ibig sabihin nun magiging magkapatid kami ni Maxx which I don't want to.

"Maxx mag rereview pa tayo remember."

Ngumiti lang sya sakin at hinalikan ako sa noo.

"You need a break sweetheart you did a great job." tapos wini-wave nya sa harap ko yung papel ng recognition ko.

Lord let this moment not end please? I'm swooning and my knees are going jelly napakapit ako sa pinto nila for support.

"What happen?." Nag alalang tanong ni Maxx. "Nothing I feel a little dizzy." sagot ko naman syempre joke lang yung dizzy.

I didn't expect his next action. He swoop me and lift me on his arms bridal style. And now I can tell I'm dizzy with too much emotion I can't help the goofy smile.

Jason- Friend nila outside the village, accountancy magaling sa Math minsan tutor din ni Heart. Ayaw ng mommy nya kasi di kasali sa circle of society nila.

Michael- Mikee (Maykee) Mechanical Eng. Kapitbahay ni Jason at Mary. Part time raketero.

Michelle- Mike (Mayk) anak ng business tycoon nasi Mr. Leehong may-ari ng Leehong group of companies nakatira sa village nila Heart sa probinsya dahil sa katigasan ng ulo pinaalaga sa lola nya na mas pabor sa kanya ayaw kasi ni Mike ng buhay nya as a super yaman.

Maxx- of course you know him. 😂

Mary- a very religious friend of Heart kapitbahay din nila Jason at Mikee naguguluhan kung magiging madre o nurse pero siguro dalawa na lang? Currently studying sa St. Therese. Gusto din ng parents ni Heart because of her religious family background.
