Remus didn't really want the other maurders to become animagus even if it was to help him, simply because he cared to much about them to let them get hurt by his hand. When it came to the part with the mandrake leaves he watched them go through nearly a whole plant of mandrake leaves, they even went as far as taking a vow not to speak for a whole month. That was when he realised he had friends for life.
