Similar to English, there are many ways that you can greet or say goodbye to somebody, both formally and informally. You may have already noticed some of my notes about when to use greetings say things such as 'informal' or 'very informal'. This will come into effect later on. You'll learn more about how French involves formality and informality in later lessons, but for now here's some quick notes on the topic:
Formally - how you speak when you are talking to somebody in a formal situation or someone that demands respect such as a boss, professor, teacher, buisness associate, or a stranger.
Informally - how you speak when talking to someone you know such as close friends, family, children/people younger than you, or people who give you permission to speak informally to them.
Let's practice. Tell me wheather the following situations would be formal or informal:
1.) speaking to the receptionist when making a doctor's appointment
2.) asking your mom how her day was
3.) telling your brother where he put his baseball mitt
4.) asking your boss about a promotion
5.) having a conversation on the phone with your boyfriend
6.) speaking to your social studies teacher about a project
7.) talking to a clerk at a department store
8.) talking to your pet dog
9.) talking to a police officer
10.) talking to your boss's children
That's all for now! Feel free to comment with your answers and I will check them for you!
À plus!
