In the last chapter, we took a look at how gender works in French. We discussed natural gender vs. grammatical gender and concluded that the best way to learn new vocabulary is to learn it with the articles. Now, we will take a look at those articles.
Definite Articles - translates to the in English
In French, the definite articles are le and la. When you place a definite article before a word starting with a vowel, it contracts to become l'. The plural form of this word is les.
Le is used for masculine words only.
La is used for feminine words only.
L' is used for all singular words that begin with a vowel.
Les is used for all plural words.
Some examples:
le chat - the cat
la fille - the girl
les enfants - the children
l'eau - the water
Indefinite Articles - translates to a, an, or some in English
In French, the indefinite articles are un, une, and des.
Un is used for masculine words only.
Une is used for feminine words only.
Des is used for all plural words.
Some examples:
un frère - a brother
une photo - a photograph
des fruits - some fruit
That's it! It's really that simple!
