What is Love?

I

Love is not lust

Not the lustful coitus

Nor the lust of a man, stalking a woman

Nor the lust of Shakespeare’s doomed lovers

Love is not lust, just paraded to be

Trapped in hypocritical society

II

Love is a commodity

Buy this, or you won’t be loved

Like this, or you won’t be loved

Commercialised as flimsy

Through media and advertising

Love is a commodity, exploited by capitalism

So now, we dig deeper, in order to find love

III

Love is what the poets say

Greater writer’s with more thoughts than I

Tennyson thoughts of his lover were equated to flowers

As he wandered his gardens forever

Love is what the poets say, but this does not enlighten me

It celebrates love, not truly knowing its correct philosophy

IV

Love is portrayed as a prison

Us, trapped beings in its cells

Masked by reality

Lied about equality

Love is portrayed as a prison, us its prisoners

But love tells us to be strong, for something grand is coming

V

Love is not just one on one

It is not just monogamy

It’s family, friends and happiness

It has no bearing, no gender, no fear

Love is not just one on one, as love is all around

Love is meant to be freeing

VI

Love is not just human

It is the love of an animal

The love of a book

The love of a higher being

Love is not just human, it’s everything

But these are only variations

VII

Love is but relationships

Big or small

Old or new

Everywhere there is love

Love is but relationships, they create identity,

Acceptance and understanding, keys to belonging.

VII

Love is you

You have the ability

The compassion, the care

As humans we can love

Love is you, all of you

Never underestimate your potential to love

IX

Love, I cannot comprehend

For it came as a miracle

Whether love is easy to attain

Or dissuade, it is then I know

Love, I cannot comprehend, I never will

Understanding on the day I say, ‘I love you’.
