34. Villanelle — Thoughts on Time

In time, it's like a watch forever wound,
Repeating on the intervals of fate,
The endless wheel returning round and round,

Our lives an arc of many minutes bound
Within that ancient dial of transient date.
In time, it's like a watch forever wound

With vast expanses mortals can't expound
In number counts too small to consummate
The endless wheel. Returning round and round,

It passes by the seasons that have frowned
Upon its cycling path as they translate
In time. It's like a watch forever wound,

Forever ticking with the silent sound
Of blooming youth and dying age that sate
The endless wheel returning round and round.

Where every sunset sinks below the ground,
It only marks the end of one estate
In time. It's like a watch forever wound,
The endless wheel returning round and round.
