"The Afghan Girl" by Steve McCurry appeared on the cover of National Geographic in June 1985. McCurry never knew the girl's name and therefore called the picture "the Afghan Girl" as she was an Afghan refugee in Pakistan.

Years later, McCurry decided to go back to Pakistan to find her. He eventually met a man who went to school with her in the camp where McCurry took the photo. He told him that her name was Sharbat Gula and that she moved back to Afghanistan. He brought her to McCurry. After seventeen years he finally knew her name.
