Ever get that feeling, after you cry a lot, that you’re just hollow? Well that’s how I felt. I had stopped crying, I couldn’t go back downstairs, it was too early for bed and I felt to empty to do anything. All there was left was to sit on my bed and stare at the ceiling. At least until there was a light tap on my door. I thought about telling whoever it was to bugger off for a moment but then deciding against it.

“Come in.” The door inched open to reveal Blake’s little sister. I didn’t know what her name was but I had a feeling I was about to find out.

“Hi.” She whispered so softly I almost didn’t hear her. I sat up and tried for a smile.

“Hi,” I replied. For a moment we just stayed where we were, too awkward to move or say anything. Then I realized that I’m older than her, I should be taking initiative not being a coward. “Can I help you with anything?” She shook her head and stood there for a bit, then hesitantly walked into my room.

“Actually I came to see if you were alright.” She stared down at her shoes looking a little embarrassed.

“My mother didn’t send you up here to check on me did she?” I asked, more than a little annoyed at her for sending someone else’s daughter to check on her own. She shook her head frantically.

“No, no, no!” She trotted right over next to my bed and perched on the edge. “I came up because I wanted to meet you and make sure you were okay. You were so brave! I could never speak to my mother like that.”

I smiled and this time it was genuine. I shuffled my body over gestured for her to sit down.

“Thank you very much. I was amazed at myself. I think I even scared myself a little.” She giggled and my smile stretched into a grin. Her smile faded a little as she examined the carpeted floor.

“I know how it feels to be ignored by your parents. Mine do it to me all the time. Blake is the favourite. He gets everything he wants, when he wants it and he gets away with everything! He’s so mean to me.” She paused and looked at me. “And he’s mean to you.” I nodded and shrugged.

“I’ve gotten used to it. I just wish that I hadn’t had to.” I brushed a stray lock of her fiery red hair off her face. “I like you, you’re pretty cute. I never would have guessed you were Blake’s sister.” She blushed and murmured a thank you. “What’s your name anyways?” I asked.

“My name is Amara Charity Kingston, please to meet you.” She stuck her hand out for me to shake. I took it and chuckled.

“My name is Sierra Lacey Denali and it’s nice to meet you too.” Her lips pulled into a grin and soon I found myself grinning right back at her. “So you’re staying here, right?” Her grin faded as she nodded. “There’s a rumor floating around school that Blake set fire to your house because he wanted to kill you.” She gasped, her eyes going wide.

“Why would he want to do that?” She asked. I shrugged.

“Apparently you stole something from him.” I explained. Her eyebrows furrowed as she shook her head slowly. “At least that’s what the rumor said.” A small smile tugged at her lips.

“No, he didn’t set our house on fire. He’s mean but he’s not that mean.” She said shaking her head. “The fire was caused by faulty circuits or wiring or something. It was a complete accident.”

“Oh okay.” I sighed. “I suppose that’ll teach me for listening to rumors. Makes me look like an idiot.” I laughed. Amara smiled. “So why are you guys staying here?”

“My parents didn’t want to waste money on a five star hotel when your mother offered for us to stay here. She’s really nice but she doesn’t seem like the best parent to you.” She added.

“She isn’t.” I scoffed. We stayed silent for a minute until I thought of something. “You guys are staying in the guest house out the back right?” She nodded. “Well you’re more than welcome to come and hang out in my room whenever you want to escape your brother. I would hate to be stuck with him.” I shuddered. Her mouth flopped open and she nodded enthusiastically.

“Yes! Oh my god, yes!” She cried and jumped up to give me a massive hug. I hugged her back tightly and a grin once again took over my face. She pulled back but her smile slowly faded.

“What’s wrong?” I inquired. She shrugged.

“It’s just that my other brother, Jaxon, was meant to come to visit in a couple of weeks. But because of the house…” She trailed off and stared at her hands. “Well he won’t be able to come.” I thought for a moment then grabbed her hand and squeezed it gently.

“Why doesn’t he stay here too?” I suggested. “I mean there is more than enough room in the guest house.” Her face lit up again.

“That would be amazing!” She exclaimed. My computer chose that moment to beep with an IM. “Well I better leave you. I have homework to do and I had better just double check with both our mothers to make sure it’s okay if Jaxon comes over.” She gave me a quick hug and shot out of the door.

I trotted over to the computer and sat down at the desk. Keying in the password I saw that Danny had messaged me about what movies we were going to watch on Saturday night.

Danman45: Hey, how’s The Princess Bride, The Ring and 10 Things I Hate About You for Sat?

Sierra_Denali_17: Ok first off, I am NOT watching The Ring. Second there may not BE a Movie-fest on Sat.

I hit send and waited for the outright rage that was Danny when you cancelled movie night.

Danman45: Sorry. WHAT?!?!?!?!!?

I sighed and rolled my eyes. Typical.

Sierra_Denali_17: Well, ok but you are sitting next to Blake Kingston.

Danman45: Huh???

Sierra_Denali_17: Guess who my mother decided to invite to stay with us after their house burnt down? (From an accidental electrical malfunction BTW)

Danman45: You have GOT to be kidding me.

Sierra_Denali_17: Nope. Not one bit.

Danman45: Have fun with that. Ok, movie night off then.

Sierra_Denali_17: Thanks so much for the offer to come over anyway and help me through the crisis.

Danman45: No worries. Bye.

I sighed and shut down my computer. How the hell was I going to keep my sanity when Blake is staying here? Granted he won't be sleeping in the same house as I am but still. No doubt my mother will insist they eat with us and use the house whenever they please. Hell, I wouldn't be surprised if she asked them to move into the house. I plugged my hard drive into my TV and threw myself on my bed. I flicked through the hundreds of movies I had and chose one at random. Scenes of evolution lit up the screen as the movie, Adaptation, began. This wasn't one of my favourite movies but I loved Nick Cage. I settled back into the bed, since I had a feeling my mother wouldn't let me eat dinner with everyone else after my outburst. My stomach growled and I groaned. Suck it up, loser. This is no ones fault but your own. I scowled at my conscience. Why did it always have to be right? I shook the thought from my head and focused on the film.
