The waiting room is empty. I'm the only one in here. My head hurts, and I feel like I can't breathe. I look at the clock again, 2:03 AM. I've been waiting here for over two hours now. A nurse comes into the room, "Are you Luke Smallbone?"
"Yes."
"Good, we finally found you. Hold on just a sec."
She leaves and I wait. I look at the clock again, 2:05 AM. This night just keeps getting longer and longer.
"Luke? Oh my goodness Luke!" Courtney comes running over to me. I stand up and hug her tighter than I ever have before. I lay my tear soaked face in her hair.
"Luke!" I look up to see my father holding my mother just as I'm holding Courtney. I mumble I love you into her hair and I hear a similar mumble that was spoken into my chest.
"Daddy!!!" Jude and Phoenix are running as fast as their little feet can carry them. Before I can process what's really going on, they strangle Courtney and I's legs.
"Hey" I let go of Courtney and lean down to the two. They wrap their little arms around my neck. I really missed them, their laughs, their voices. I stand up and mum comes towards me. I hug her as she cries, looking to my dad for somesort of answer or help to all of this. He comes over and mum releases me. She wipes her eyes and sits down in the closet chair.
"Moriah?" I ask my father.
"She wanted to have a little time to herself."
"Where is she?"
"Last I saw her was in the other waiting room just down the hall." I walk over to Courtney kiss her forehead and tell her that I'll be right back. I walk out of the room and down the hall in search for Moriah. I finally see her staring out a window into the darkness of the night.
"Moriah?" she glances at me then back at the window.
"Moriah...I'm sorry...this is all my fault." she turns to look at me.
"No it's not. The kidnapper that did this is to blame. They said that after you were sent to the hospital, the guy woke up. They said he told them everything. You didn't do anything wrong."
"Yes I did. I let him save me. I would've been the one in there on that bed being operated on...not him! Don't you see? I'm to blame! I should've taken the bullet!" fresh tears are streaming down my face and I just want to scream.
"Luke, you didn't know. You didn't know that guy was waiting for you. You didn't know that he was armed. You didn't know that the trigger would be pulled. And you definately didn't know that Joel was gonna jump in front of you." Moriah is crying just as hard as I am now. Time seems to slow even more, and what feels like hours of standing there crying is actually only a minute. A nurse comes in the room with mum, dad, Courtney and the kids, and five of my siblings.
"He's out of surgery now if you would like to see him." the nurse says. We follow her down the hall, and prepare ourselves for the worst.
