Mare tore at the collar around her neck, letting the spikes dug into the soft flesh of the back of her neck, and she enjoyed the welcome distraction they call pain.
In pain, she could forget the countless newblood she'd left in an attempt to save them.
In pain, she could forget her family, and Kilorn, whom she loved so much and deeply regretted not keeping her promise to.
In pain, she could forget Shade, who died for her mistakes, now rotting in a simple grave far away from home.
In pain, she could forget Cal, their every stolen kisses and every time they shared a bed as he listened to her woes, the only person who ever understood her.
Most of all, in pain, she could forget Maven, his merciless, icy blue eyes burning into her brown ones as he forced her to dredge up every sweet memory of him she had, memories of the boy she thought she'd known.
She gritted her teeth as the spikes dug deeper, and she could feel trickles of blood running down the plain, ivory dress. Maven would be enraged, or humored. Either way, she wouldn't know - she could barely remember the last time she saw him, in his kingly clothes and before all silver nobles as he lay out her shame for the whole world to see.
Feeling particularly useless, with the weight of the silent stone pressing against her, she put her head against it, and tried to fight the tears that were about to come.
The door blasted open, and for the briefest moment she thought she was being rescued, before remembering that nobody cared for her enough to rescue her.
A magnetron, one she couldn't name, was standing before her, eyes stern.
"Get up."
She laughed, though it had no humor to it. It was a laugh of someone who had nothing to lose and everything to gain. "Make me."
The soldier frowned grimly, before stepping into the cell and grabbed her by the leash Maven fashioned for her.
She growled, every bit the wild animal Maven made her, but complied. She tried calling for the electricity within herself and smash this guard until he was nothing but ash, but her time in the cell had taken its toll, and she was helpless against the horrors of this palace.
He took her into the palace, which was a displeasant surprise. For one, she didn't particularly enjoy being on display once more. But she held her head high, retreating into Mareena's skin. She would not grovel at the ground and beg. She is red-and-silver, stronger than both.
And nothing could change that.
The familiar door sent chills down her neck. She remembered the last time she was here, knocking on the door for him, the wretched creature, and hoped that he would run with her after the night was over. Instead, he betrayed her.
Maven's room.
The guard shoved her through the door, then pushed her into a crude cage -most likely sculpted from silent stone- too small for her. She gazed at it in horror - was there no end to Maven's horrendous and humiliating means?
She crouched in the cage, sullen, and waited for the guard to leave. With the silent stone supressing her abilities, she couldn't possibly know how many cameras were in the room, so if she were to escape, she needed to do it quickly. Thankfully, she was briefly free from the silent stone before, and that made her stronger.
And harder to restrain.
The cage was sealed by a thick piece of metal above her, courtesy of the magnetron, so the cage was virtually impenetrable but to magnetrons.
