aria's mind raced.

for a moment,
the boy seemed to appear shocked,
almost as shocked as she had been.

her heart thumped in her chest,
every breath coming out fast.

she blushed and saw the boy blink quickly in her direction,
as if he had never seen such a small person with such heavy eyes.

but the girl sighed,
pushing the thought of hope out of her mind,
believing that it was just a coincidence,
that the weight in her chest wasn't really there.

it was easier that way.
nobody stayed once they knew she didn't speak.

the cold wire of her chair felt ironically hot against her legs.

she breathed in the air,
in,
out,
in,
out.

the small notebook burned with an ache for her to write,
and she closed her eyes,
willing the words to take her away from this cafe.

away from this bloody boy whose brown eyes were still drawn to her.

everything she did then was an adverb,
she thought calmly,
wrote down furiously,
counted her breaths evenly.

the repetition was there.
the shop,
the table,
the coffee scented air.

but those eyes.

that boy.

they were something else entirely.
