My eyes fluttered open at the sound of a little girl singing. I immediately sat up and turned to my left where she sat, her back pressed against an old oak tree.She smiled widely before pointing at the horizon where the yellow sun has began to rise for a new morning.
"Come on!" She exclaimed as she ran up the hill, urging me to follow her.
Every step I took made my insides churn. Nonetheless, I followed her as fast as I could.
She's just filled with smiles and giggles and happiness and . . .
Joy.
I wanted to hold her in my arms.
When I reached the top of the hill, my world crumbled down as the sky painted the most drastic sunset I've ever seen, stained red with her own blood.
