Chapter 6
~*~*~*~

"Thank you again for your time. We're sorry for everything that has occurred and we will do our best to make sure you're safe."

I feigned a smile at the officer. The same thing said once again. 'Safe'. Maybe I've been mistaken on the definition of the word 'safe' my whole life then, because that was the furthest from how I felt. Especially when a gun was held to my head. How could I be safe if Andrew was still out there?

"And, you're positive he didn't hurt you or do any of those things to your face?"

I pressed my lips together in an attempt to hold back my frustration. It was trees!

"I'm sure," I conjured politely.

I closed the door behind me as I walked out of his office. Ahead, Alex sat at the front, his head in his hands.

"Hey," I said faintly. He stood up the moment he saw me. "Are you ready to go?"

"Ever, I'm so sorry. I shouldn't have let you out of my sight again. You could have been taken or killed. I promised I'd watch out for you and... "

"Alex, I'm fine. I promise. And, it's because of you that I wasn't taken or killed. You can't blame yourself for what happened in the bathroom, okay? There was nothing you or any guy could have done at that point. It wasn't your fault."

"I know, but it's.." he paused and then shook his head. His way of telling me 'Never mind'.

"It's what?"

"Nothing. Let's just go home. Your parents and Danny are worried sick."

He wasn't going to tell me. There was no way I could win.

He opened the door for me and we both walked outside, the bitter chilly air hitting the both of us as we walked out. I shivered involuntarily at the unexpected breeze, goosebumps spreading all over my body. Add to that the icy cold sprinkling that began to make its way down from the sky.

Within seconds that sprinkling turned into drizzling. I stayed looking down at the ground, watching every single rain drop darken the gray pavement. Small puddles began to form, I didn't bother trying to avoid them.

Something heavy was placed on my back, preventing the rain from drenching me further. I looked up and saw Alex to the side of me. His jacket was off, he only had his tee shirt on. His hand found its way onto the small of my back as he lead me to the truck.

"Come on, let's get you inside."

He opened the car door for me making sure I got in alright before shutting it. I watched as he ran around the front of the car to the driver's seat.

He got pretty soaked out there, making his hair fall flat and his shirt cling to his skin. My goodness, he looked... I dare not think it. I knew I would start blushing like mad. Boy, was he fit. When did he ever find time to work out? I mean, he couldn't have been born that muscular.

A baby with muscles just popped into my head.

What is wrong with me?

I cleared my throat. "Thank you for letting me borrow your jacket." I needed something to distract me from my thoughts.

"You're welcome." He turned the key in the ignition, but remained sitting there, unmoving after the engine started. He huffed out a breath of air before saying, "I was supposed to protect you. I wasn't supposed to let anything bad happen to you. How can I not blame myself for what happened?" He shook his head at himself.

"You did protect me, Alex. He would have tried to get to me either way, but you stopped him from taking me anywhere. Alex, you have to promise me you won't blame yourself if anything happens to me." He slowly shook his head. "Please, Alex? For me?"
