The Social Media Generation: Poem

The Social Media Generation

We walk around

Slaves to likes and comments,

Spending so much of our time

Pairing the perfect photo with the perfect caption to get to that 11 likes,

Where things change from names to numbers.

I am no different.

Even I find myself editing photos—

Photoshop and filters—

And looking for quotes,

#This

#That

And don't you dare break that 254 day streak with that friend,

Even if those pictures end up just being ceiling tiles,

Rather than your smiling face.

We are to the point of knowing which app we received a notification from

Just by the blinking LED light, or by the vibration our phone gives us.

We don't even have to look, don't even have to open our phone to know.

It's sad. It's sad how enslaved to social media we've become.

And it'll only get worse.

Unless...

We turn off our phones.

Delete those apps.

Silence Your Cellphone Now.

Ignore those streaks.

Quit worrying about the perfect photo and perfect caption.

It's our lives taken over by these miniature computers in our hands.

And we need to take it back.
