KOREAN CHARACTER

A Korean character is formed by grouping a cluster of 2 to 5 Korean basic letters. The final form is read from left to right and top to bottom.

Each syllable takes the following form:

Consonant + Vowel + [optional Vowel] + [optional Consonant] + [optional Consonant]

• BASIC RULES •

There are sounds that are not in Hangul. English letters like f, v, z. But it can still be written in Hangul.

F is pronounced as P (ㅍ)
V is pronounced as B (ㅂ)
Z is pronounced as J (ㅈ)

If the vowel is a horizontal shape like ㅏ (a), ㅑ(ya), ㅓ (eo), ㅕ (yeo), then the letters are joined horizontally. And if the vowel is a vertical shape like ㅗ (o), ㅛ (yo), ㅜ (u), ㅠ (yu), ㅡ (eu), then the letters are joined vertically.

There are variations of this that allow vowels to be placed in both horizontal and vertical positions as seen below. If more than one vowel is used, they are always sounded together before the final consonant(s).

A Korean syllable will always contain 2 or more letters. Therefore, if a syllable begins with a vowel sound, ㅇ is written first and represents the null consonant. It has no sound.

For example:
Annyeong / An-nyeong (a + n + n + yeo + ng)
Wrong: ㅏㄴ녕
Correct: 안녕

• KEEP THIS IN MIND •

1. Number 1 are always a consonant, while the Number 2 are always a vowel.

2. When writing your name in Hangul, remember to write it based on its pronunciation and not the spelling.
