Sin Saimdang 신사임당 (also known as Hyeonmoyangcheo 현모양처, it means wise mom or good wife) is the first woman to appear on a South Korean banknote. A portrait of her and her drawings—Mook grapes 묵포도도 and Chochungdosubyeong 초충도수병, were illustrated on the front. While paintings (wolmaedo and pungjugdo) of the Joseon dynasty were illustrated on the back side. Unlike other bills, the illustrations on the back of this bill were illustrated vertically.

Bank of Korea said that they put Sin Saimdang in the money because of gender equality. But many women said that Sin Saimdang's image does not represent gender equality because her image is a good wife and a wise mother. She is the ideal woman of the past (the Joseon dynasty), not today.
