Alex stared out the window for the third day straight, not bothering to move from her seat. She didn't know how to feel. It was as if someone had sucked all of the life out of her, leaving her as an emotionless shell of her old self.
"Alex?" Kara called out, knocking on the door as she walked into the room. "It's time."
The tension in the air was thicker than anyone ever thought possible, especially when it came to the two sisters. Both of them blamed themselves for Maggie's death, but for different reasons. Alex wondered if she could've stopped Maggie from leaving, and Kara wished she was fast enough to stop the car from going up in flames.
"I can't," Alex whispered. "Please make her come back."
Kara let out a sigh as she rushed over to wrap her older sister in her arms. "I can't do that, Alex."
Alex opened her mouth to say something, but the words were lost before she could speak them. Instead, a loud sob escaped. "We were going to get married. I loved her so much, Kara. I loved her so, so much."
"I know. Are you coming to her funeral?"
Alex's heart shattered at the word. Funerals meant it was real; funerals meant she was never coming back. "I guess," she said with a reluctant sigh.
Kara nodded and helped Alex up from the chair. "Let's get going."
Alex and Kara walked hand-in-hand to the car, where their mom was waiting. Alex's eyes were too clouded over by the tears to see properly, but it looked like she was crying too, or at least she had been.
The rest of the day, Alex was retreating further and further into her own mind. She wasn't talking to anyone, or even showing any sign of emotion. The funeral seemed to zoom by in her mind, with only bits and pieces of it sticking in her memory.
Alex couldn't say her speech during the funeral, even though she'd recited it over and over in her head. She barely had enough energy to open her mouth, let alone speak.
The coffin was closed during the time everyone socialized. It made sense, since Maggie was burned beyond the point of recognition, but it still hurt not to see her face one last time.
Maggie's parents never showed up. Alex didn't care, though. They kicked her out and hurt her.
The last thing Alex remembered that day was Kara rubbing her back as she cried herself to sleep that night, just like every other one the past three days.
After all, Maggie was the one that got away.
Whoops. Remind me not to watch Katy Perry videos while trying to think of ideas. On that note, please tell me your ideas because I suck at them and would love more.
