We had just stopped in Helgen when we were ushered out of the carriage, getting one step closer to our deaths. As I stepped off of the cart, I looked ahead of me, meeting the eyes of a red-haired Imperial soldier. As he called the names of Ulfric Stormcloak, Ralof, and Lokir, I knew I was next. When they stepped away, Lokir ran off screaming but he was shot down by the Imperial archers. The redheaded officer eyed me closely.

"You there." He called to me. "Step forward." I obeyed and walked toward him slowly. "Who are you?"

"I-I'm (y/n) of (v/n)." I answered softly. He smiled sympathetically, as if he could tell I didn't belong there.

"You picked a bad time to come to Skyrim, (y/r)." He said. "Captain, what should we do? She's not on the list." I smiled and let out a sigh of relief.

"Forget the list." She said coldly. "She goes to the block." My smile diminished as any hope I had in my heart faded away, just as my life was destined to, in just minutes.

"By your orders, Captain." He said sadly, and then looked back to me. "I'm sorry." A tear escaped my eye as I followed the captain to my death. The Priestess of Arkay began her prayer but a Stormcloak prisoner interrupted.

"For the love of Talos, shut up, and let's get this over with!" He shouted, walking toward the block.

"As you wish." She replied, clearly annoyed by his rudeness. He was pushed onto the block by that wretched Captain.

"My ancestors are smiling on me Imperials!" He said. "Can you say the same?" The headsman chopped his head off and I looked away in heavy tears.

"You Imperial bastards!" A Stormcloak woman shouted.

"Justice!" A villager shouted.

"Death to the Stormcloaks!" Another one cheered.

"As fearless in death, as he was in life." Ralof said sadly. I looked back at him with sad, sorry eyes. I couldn't imagine his pain, watching a brother-in-arms be killed right in front of him.

"The (y/r) in the rags!" The Captain yelled at me. I moved my feet only a step before a roar within the clouds caught everyone's attention.

"What was that?" The redhead asked.

"It was nothing!" Shouted General Tullius. "Carry on!"

"I said, next prisoner!" The Captain yelled again.

"To the block, prisoner." He said softly. "Nice and easy." I looked to him with sad eyes as I walked to my death. I was pushed onto the block, the tower to be the very last thing I'd see. I cried silently as the headsman raised his axe. He was stopped when a dragon landed on the very tower I had my eyes locked on.

"Dragon!" Someone yelled. The dragon shouted and fire rained from the sky. I fell off the block and struggled to stand up. Every noise around me was muffled as I regained my balance and my senses.

"Hey, (y/r)!" Ralof shouted at me. "Get up, let's go! The gods won't give us another chance!" I stood up and following him into the tower.

"Jarl Ulfric, what was that thing?!" He asked frantically. "Could the legends be true?"

"Legends don't burn down villages." He replied. "We need to move, now!" Ralof and I ran up the tower, but the dragon busted through the wall and blew his fire into the tower. I jumped down into the destroyed building below and kept running, but ran into the redheaded soldier as he was trying to get a child away from the dragon's fire. I ran up to him.

"Still alive, prisoner?" He asked, looking at me. "Keep close to me if you want to stay that way!" I followed him through another destroyed building and into the keep. I leaned on my knees to catch my breath as I looked at him.

"Thank you." I managed to say through panting.

"You have a name?" He asked. I nodded and stood back up.

"(Y/n)." I said as I finally caught my breath.

"Hadvar." He said before motioning toward a dead soldier. "Take his gear, you may need it. Get that armor on and give that sword a few swings." He turned around as I changed into the imperial armor. I tested out the sword by swinging it at the air a few times, telling him I was decent. He turned back around and opened a door nearby.

"How do we get out of here?" I asked.

"Just follow me." He said as he led me through the keep. We made it out, killing any Stormcloaks in our way. As we reached the sunlight, I basked in it happily.

"I owe you my life, Hadvar." I said through joyful tears as I threw my arms around him in a tight hug. He hugged me back and pulled away, smiling lightly.

"I couldn't have made it out without you." He said. "Thank you, (y/n)." I smiled as we started walking.

"Where do we go from here?" I asked.

"My uncle Alvor lives in Riverwood, he's the blacksmith there." He said. "He may be able to help us." I nodded as we walked.

When we arrived, we were invited into Alvor's home. I rested up and prepared for my trip to Whiterun. Hadvar stopped me as I opened the door.

"Come back and visit me soon, all right?" He requested with a smile. "We could... get a drink." I smiled and hugged him once again and kissed his stubbled cheek.

"I'll be seeing you again, Hadvar." I said as I walked away. I waved to him and his family as I left the village. I had hoped I'd see him again, he saved my life and I could never repay that.
