setting is key

one thing I always get a little uncomfortable with when reading a story is the clashing of two different setting. Specifically, the time where the story is set.

For example, recently I've been into reading stories about The Outsiders. The book takes place in the '60s and since the movie was filmed in the '80s, some might say it took place at that time as well.

Being a person from the future and going into the past seems to be a reoccurring theme, and to be honest, I like that prompt a lot. But one thing...

The character has no belongings and she magically transports into the past!! All of a sudden, next week she is wearing her leggings, uggs, and an Aeropostale shirt. Where in the fuuuuuuudge did she get them?

Magically, of course.

Just kidding though. This really bugs me.

So, if you are a writer that has a setting that is different to the events around it, the slang, the clothes, etc., your story sorta pisses me off.

Now let's have an example of how some of that shit may go down:

"Hey, Donkey-human what's up dude?" I asked the ol D-h.

"Nothing much but feeling litttt" all of a sudden his eyes wIdened.

"Uhhhhhhhg"

"Spit it out or I'll fucking shove your head down the gutter and spit on that!" eye yelled politely,

"your forever 21 shirt has a stain on it"

"Oh wow thanks I'll love you forever" I giggled while going to hug him while almost tripping on my pair of Uggs that design had been released in 2015 and worn to the TaylorSwift™ concert.
