The NES Remix series started on the WiiU as a fun an innovative idea to give fans nostalgia for their old games while also putting fun and difficult twists on them. Both NES Remix one and two are fun and have clever puzzles and interesting side games, but being WiiU exclusives you can only play this micro games at home.

Nintendo finally had the idea of creating a third installment, mixing old with new, and throwing it onto the 3DS.

Now in this game we have the remixes, Championship Mode, and Speed Mario Bros. Speed Mario Bros is Super Mario Bros sped up. Everything is faster, including the time limit. It's a fun distraction that holds up as unique, especially out of the other options. Championship Mode is that, the Championship. With incredibly lengthy challenges like the Nintendo World Championship.

Obviously you'll be spending the bulk of your time in Remix. Tons of popular NES games are here, including The Lost Levels, and even Dr. Mario.

Most levels go like this: you'll be dropped into a specific point of the game with a very specific goal. Like in Super Mario Bros: Get to the Goal Pole. You have three lives and every time you fail a challenge, whether or not you get killed by an enemy, don't make it in time, or in more specific stages like hopping on a shell to get 1 UPs, ruin the set up situation and it can't be fixed without a reset. If you run out of lives you can just restart. A level is sometimes broken into multiple parts where it builds on the previously established goal and makes it harder.

Sometimes you'll have six lives for the more extensive challenges but normally it's three. Now in certain games like Doctor Mario you spend the first few levels learning how to preform certain tricks to improve your ability. This is great, when the level is broken up you can learn the trick and then you'll have to figure out how to use it to complete the challenge.

Now after you complete a challenge you'll get stars. Depending on how many lives you had left, if you restarted the challenge in the middle of the challenge instead of from the beginning, and how quickly you beat it. If you do everything perfectly you'll get three stars and the rainbow boarder. Stars let you unlock more stages and different games. And if you get all stages with rainbow boarder and three stars you unlock bonus content.

Many of the challenges are well challenging. They have great variety and can really stump you at times. But if it becomes too difficult or you can't figure out a puzzle then you can watch the fastest completions of the level, they also show you what buttons the person presses so you can emulate them.

The only problem with this is you can only access the fastest times and your friends' replays. And if you don't have friends with the game you have to rely on speedrunners. Normally this does work but for certain stages all the replays just contain the AI screwing up, which doesn't help me at all. Not only that but this game clearly didn't get much attention because nobody on YouTube has played it.

This is a real shame because it's a fun game. It's perfect for the 3DS because you can pause at any time and all the games are short, so it's perfect for on the go gaming.

The last stage in each game is normally battling the final boss or doing tons of tasks. It's where the real challenge shines and really gives you an idea of what the games are like. This makes you want to play them and in turn get an NES Classic. That's the smart part about these. they give you a taste of these classic games so you can see why they were so popular.

The real Remixing done is in the Remix stages. They do fun things with the games and change them. Like Luigi rescuing Mario from Donkey Kong and then the game telling you to GO BACK TO THE START! This is original and clever. My favorite Remix Stage so far however is a stage where Mario has to get a purse drop in Donkey Kong, and he has a few short jumps but only 10 seconds. Then the game did what I least expected it to do, the camera zoomed in giving us only a small idea of Mario's surroundings.

Suddenly I appreciated this game so much more, they took the time to do this kind of stuff. You can be Link in Donkey Kong, but you can't jump. Challenge. Play as Peach in Mario 3 collecting coins. Fun! Have the game do something 100% unique to this series. INCREDIBLE!

I only recently started playing this game again because when I got it two years ago I ragequit because I needed to actually think. I've now gotten better at playing these games and I'm still playing right now. This game is loaded with tons of content.

The only other problem I noticed was that there were huge lag spikes sometimes, though that may just be because I was using a regular 3DS it's still an issue especially with such precise and unforgiving games.

One more thing before I go, the final stage in Remix is broken up into 11 parts. They constantly kept me challenged and on my toes throughout playing through the stages.

This game is clever and wonderful. It shows Nintendo can still do something with even the oldest of their titles. They don't just have to repackage them to show how fun they are. The game isn't without its flaws but it deserves much more credit than it gets. The game would be great just if it was only the two Remix stages. I recommend picking it up and giving it a play while we all wait for the next Pokémon game to be announced. Here's to hoping we get SNES Remix sometime in the future.
