meeting him -norway

I slept through my second ever plane ride. Of course I did, Sharna dragged me out of bed at six in the morning. What did she expect? I'm sure she has fallen asleep on a flight before too.

Sharna tells me to stay on the plane, which is a little bit odd. She did say she has a surprise for me, but what would an airplane have to do with that? That's not my business to meddle in, I'll see the surprise when I get it. Or when it gets here...I really don't know what's going on.

I stand up from my seat and walk to the back of the plane to go to the bathroom. Everything on a plane is so small. I step back out of the bathroom and I see somebody sitting in the seat next to Sharna. It looks like a man, which leaves me to wonder, does Sharna have a boyfriend? And if so, is that my surprise? If this guy /is/ my surprise, he's not what I was expecting. At all. But, if this makes Sharna happy, then I'll go along with it.

I continue to walk down the aisle, humming along to the music I am listening to. Sharna waves me over to her, so I begin to walk faster. When I arrive at our seats, my heart nearly stops. The man sitting there is James.

I look at him, then back at Sharna. That pattern continues until I can find my voice again. When I do, it's still shaky, "Sharna, how is he here? /Why/ is he here?" James looks just as shocked as I do.

Sharna, the only one who doesn't look confused, overwhelmed, excited, and nervous all at the same time, replies with ease. "I told you I had a surprise, and I told James I'd let him meet you. Everything played out perfectly." she stands up, "Let's get off of the plane, then we can talk."

James stands up right after her, which is when I realize I'm still standing in the aisle, blocking everybody who is trying to exit. "Sorry." I say half-heartedly as I hurry to follow Sharna and James.

"Okay, now, James and I will answer any questions you have." Sharna walks up to the baggage claim.

I don't hesitate to turn to James. He smiles and looks over at Sharna, who is smiling as well. "So, you're the James Hinchcliffe I've heard so much about." I circle him jokingly.

James raises an eyebrow and chuckles, "Yes, that's me. You've heard a lot about me?" I notice him glance over at Sharna, who is on her phone. They would make a good couple, but Sharna has told me that they are only friends.

"I have heard about you. And it's amazing to finally meet you." I can't keep up my serious stance any longer. I'm meeting James, the guy Sharna spends almost every moment with. I let those words sink in before James speaks again.

He takes a lanyard from his back pocket and hands it to me. I tilt my head slightly, confused. "Read it." James says calmly. I flip the lanyard so I can read what it says.

It's a VIP pass into the Indianapolis 500 race. So thats why Sharna brought me here..."Are we going to this?" My eyes light up and I turn to Sharna.

She rolls her eyes and gives a small laugh, "Why would we give you the lanyard if we weren't going?"

In my excitement, I hug Sharna. Then, I turn to hug James, not really knowing what I was doing. To my surprise, he gently hugs me back, as if he was afraid to break me. "We're going to grab some lunch before we go to the track, though." James says when I pull away.

"Can we /please/ get cake?" I beg. We just finished lunch and the waiter handed us a dessert menu. I politely asked Sharna for a slice of chocolate cake, but she objected. So, I moved onto begging. Sharna keeps looking to James for support, but he also wants cake. The two of us together must have overpowered Sharna, because, eventually, she caves and we order two slices. James and I high-five under the table.

The cake is brought to our table about twenty minutes later. James digs into his slice as if he has never eaten before. I take small, delicate bites. That's how we are different. "Hey, James, it looks like you're enjoying that cake." Sharna begins to laugh.

He looks up at her, taking his eyes off of the cake for the first time since we got it. "As a matter of fact, I am enjoying this." he pauses, getting some of the cake's icing on his finger, "And I think you would too." He puts the icing on Sharna's nose. Is it bad that I want my Mom to be with her Dancing with the Stars partner? They're just so cute together, and yes, I just called Sharna my Mom. The next step is to say it out loud...yeah, that's not happening. Not yet.

"James..." Sharna whines as she wipes the icing off of her nose with her napkin. She ends up laughing, which makes James laugh too.

I take the last bite of my cake as the waiter comes back over to the table to take our plates. Sharna pulls some money from her purse to pay for our meal, but James takes it from her and takes his wallet out of his back pocket. "I'll pay. This is my treat." He playfully sticks Sharna's money in her her bun, so it sticks out.

"At least I'm a bit taller now." She says, giggling and taking the money from her hair. We walk out of the restaurant, James holding the door for us.

I stand outside of the garage as a reporter interviews James and Sharna, and the Dancing with the Stars cameramen film for next week's package. Honestly, that's all I've been doing since we got to the race track, hiding. I hear Sharna laughing and I wish I could be there. But that's just not reality. Tears begin to pool in the corners of my eyes, but I wipe them away before anyone notices. I see the interviewer walking away and I perk up. James comes around the corner, Sharna behind him.

"You want to take a ride in my car?" James asks, nudging my shoulder. I look to Sharna for approval and she nods. Did she suddenly trust him enough to let him take me in his car?

"Uh, sure!" I reply, all of the sadness I had minutes ago disappearing. Sure, this would be scary, but it could be fun. Besides, I'm sure he's not going to go at the speed he does in races.

As I was getting ready to go, I kept glancing over at James and Sharna, who were talking the entire time. They never seemed to run out of things to say to one another. In Sharna's eyes was a glimmer I had never seen before, one that was only present when she was around James.

She likes him, I know it.
