"Mom, can you believe it's been nine months since James proposed to you?" I watch as Sharna gets the finishing touches put on her hair and makeup. My cousins Hannah and Lily run into the room and Hannah starts to put makeup on Lily. It's cute, but Lily isn't old enough to be wearing makeup in my opinion. The only thing she puts on is lip gloss, which is okay, I guess.
"No, I can't believe it. He's gonna be your dad, Nor. That's even harder to believe." Sharna smiles at me and gently removes an extra pin from her hair. I keep forgetting that after today James will technically be my dad. I can't quite wrap my head around that.
"I'm going to head out onto the beach and help people to their seats. See you in a bit!" I quickly wave to Sharna and leave the room, my pastel blue dress flowing out behind me. I pass by James as I run through the halls and I skid to a stop.
James grins, his hands in his suit pockets. "Doesn't my future daughter look absolutely stunning?" He leans over and hugs me, but I manage to get away from him quickly.
I want to stay and talk, I promised Sharna I'd help escort people though, so thats my first priority right now, "Thanks, but I have things to do." I take off again and I hear James chuckle and walk off in the other direction.
As expected, there are some people having trouble finding their seats. This is a fairly big wedding, so that's expected. I take a moment to take in the beautiful beach air and scenery. Sharna wanted to come back to Australia for the wedding so it would be easier for her family to attend. She and James settled on having the wedding on the coast. It's a far drive for some of her family and James' family had to fly in, but it's so pretty here that it's totally worth it.
I walk up to my grandma, Sharna's mom, and take her to her seat. It's right in the first row, which is mainly reserved for close family. I hate not being able to stop and talk to people, so I make a mental note to stop and chat with everybody once we are at the reception. I continue to take family and friends to their seats for a while. I sit down for a few minutes, only until I feel somebody tapping on my back. I swiftly turn around, ready to tell somebody to cut it out. The person in front of me is the last person I would have expected to be here. Caleb. He laughs slightly and walks a bit so he is in front of me. I turn back around and hug him. "How are you here?" I ask excitedly, straightening my dress.
He plays with his bow tie as he replies, "I took a plane. I thought you'd know that." he pokes my arm, which makes me giggle. "Your mom invited me. My parents only agreed to let me come if I stayed near you for as much of the night as I can. They don't want me getting lost." He shrugs.
"They let you come alone?" I know Caleb's parents aren't the most laid-back pair, so that statement kind of surprises me.
"I guess they trust you and your parents." I get caught off guard when he says 'parents', but I'm going to have to get used to people saying that. "Everything is gorgeous." he looks around for a second before turning back to me.
Everything? If he really meant that, then didn't that imply me too? I need to stop thinking like this. But he's in a suit...and his hair is just wavy enough to be considered perfect. Get it together! I think to myself. "Hey, what time is it?" I quickly ask him, partly because I need to know, and partly because I want to change the subject.
He glances at his watch, "It's 3:15." he says simply. Shoot. The wedding starts in fifteen minutes. He asks me where his seat is and I try to find an empty seat. First, I look to see if there is one next to me, but there isn't. I see an empty, unclaimed seat about four rows back and I take him there. Caleb is stuck in between two people I've never seen in my life, I think they are James' friends. He gives me a nervous look and mouths, Is there anywhere else I could be? I smile, a bit sadly, and shake my head before running to find Lily and Hannah, who are the flower girls. I get them their flower baskets full of white rose petals and lead them to the beginning of the aisle. I can be a really good party planner when I want to be. I walk down the rows of chairs until I find mine, which is, of course, in the front row. The photographer stops in front of James' mom and I. She asks for a photo, so we put an arm around each other and smile. The photographer thanks us and walks away. I shut my phone down and put it under my seat. The soft music begins to play and Lily and Hannah walk down the aisle, their rose petals fluttering in the ocean air before settling on the sand. The rest of the wedding party walks down the aisle, but I can tell nobody really cares about them. Everyone wants to see James and Sharna. Sharna's bridesmaids, Peta, Lindsay, Emma, and one of her childhood friends, walk down the aisle.
