Fire

Enveloped with screams,
The Flames caress 24 floors.
Smoke curdles-
In the lungs of children,
As the inferno barricades doors.

The loss of life is belittling,
As the world watches beguild,
Expecting the devil in the death count,
A mother mourns for her child.

There's an unfairness in such happenstance,
A lack of balance in the world.
For nothing but pain is bestowed,
From hell itself, unfurled.

"Why?" Yells a sister,
"No!" Sobs another,
As someone grieves a friend,
Another grieves a brother.

Yet even through this scorched vista,
How silver-eyed we are!
We see the selfless duty of soldiers,
Determined to go far.

Fire-fighters battled ferociously,
With a structure lost to the roaring of a blaze,
Not once looking back to question themselves,
As they were immersed in the haze.

Heroism inflamed with empathetic wonder,
At the emotional scars burned into their minds,
For they witnessed death first-hand,
Felt fear through frightened eyes.

And so respect is granted,
A country swells with pride.
For appreciation is infinite,
For courage that doesn't hide.

Too many lives were lost,
But many lives were saved,
Because of the strength and bravery,
That was selflessly displayed.

A/N- I'm sure a lot have you have heard about the tragedy that has arisen from the fire that took over Grenfell Towers in London on 14.06.17.

Last I checked over 30 people had been confirmed dead and over 70 were still missing. The majority of these people were families and close friends living together, completely unaware of what was about to happen. Things like this seem so unfair.

Many children who lived in that tower block were my age and they lost everything. It certainly puts things into perspective.

Now we can only offer our prayers and support to those affected and thank everyone who risked their lives to help save others. It's gratifying to see that there is a certain equilibrium between sadness and strength; misery and bravery; helplessness and perseverance.

All my love.
