we have been through a lot
together ashley. the situation
with my parents, your cancer...
someone said to me yesterday,
"if you hadn't pursued her, you
wouldn't be suffering right now
because you would not have
gotten so attached."i punched him.
hard. i broke his nose. i can't
say i'm exactly proud of it but
i definitely don't regret it. before
i met you i would never have done
something like that. like i said, we
have been through a lot, and
because of those things, i changed.
i am stronger because of our trials.
and ashley, because of that, i can
let you go. you taught me so many
things. things that you didn't
even realize you taught me. through
everything, meeting you, dating, and
you getting cancer and dying, you
taught me something important.
and while you taught me i found
my true self.you taught me to live.

With trembling hands he folded the letter and carefully placed it in the box with the others. He closed the lid with a flourish, an air of finality lingering over him.
This was it. The last letter. The last connection he had to Ashley.
He set the box aside. Tomorrow he would bury it.
As much as it hurt him to cut the final ties that held him and Ashley together he knew this was something he needed to do. He was letting her go.
He wasn't trying to forget her; he would never forget her. He was simply cutting ties and living the way she would want him to. Besides, he had promised he would be happy, and in order to keep that promise, he needed to let her go.
Release her from his heart.
"Ashley," he said softly, "I love you. Forever. Thank you for making me promise to be happy. Thank you for loving me, and most of all thank you for teaching me how to live."
With those words, he let her go.
