Destruction vs. Beauty

Liam likes nature. He likes the way the wind blows against his skin and makes him feel alive. He likes the way the streams make that running water noise as they hit the rocks and rush downstream. It’s beautiful, all of it. Even when the trees are leaf-less and the snow is on the ground. It’s always beautiful. No matter what. He was raised in nature anyway, in the country side, on a big farm with his family and horses and cows.

Zayn, on the other hand, is a city guy. Raised in an apartment and on the smelly streets with hot dog carts and construction. He loves the city, its home to him. Everything about it is comforting and brings him closer to the people he loves. There is nowhere else he would rather be, then in the city and with the people he loves. No matter how polluted, he will always love the city.

This is why the two are such a strange match. They are best friend, connected at the hip. They take turns. One day the hang at Liam’s place in the countryside and the next, they buy hot dogs from the street vendors and then catch a movie on the strip. They’ve been like this for years. But things are changing. Everything about them is changing. The way they act around each other. How they feel. They’re adults now. Their lives are going to change. And maybe they won’t be together for much longer, doing their push and pull of city and country. It scares both of them, but neither says anything about it aloud. That would make it feel all too real, and that’s ever scarier than the idea of it.

“You could move out with me to the country,” Liam smiles at Zayn one day as they are driving out past cornfields and towards his home.

Zayn laughs, “How about you get an apartment beside mine, in the city. You know, where life is actually busy and fun,”

Liam shakes his head, “You know we’ll never be able to settle,” He looks away from the street for a moment to stare at Zayn and watch his beautiful golden eyes sweep over the horizon, then back to Liam. There are little tears in the corners of his eyes and Liam wonders why. “Zayn, babe, don’t worry about it. We’ll work it out,”

“No, we might not Li,” Zayn sighs, “It’s not that easy. This can’t keep on like this,”

“Why not?” Liam’s eyes widen and he is so confused. Their relationship has been like this for so long, why does it have to change now?

Liam isn’t looking at the road anymore, and suddenly, there is a honking, and it’s too late.

            The world goes black.

When Zayn comes to, he is in the middle of the road, and he curses the country for being so empty and unpopulated. There is blood everywhere and he feels half numb, crawling through debris. Liam is there, laying on the ground and there is blood dripping from his mouth. Zayn’s heart pounds and he crawls towards him, pulling the unconscious Liam into his arms.

“Liam, please, no,” Zayn whimpers, “I’m sorry. I’m sorry we can live in the country. We can live in the country,”

Maybe their stupid preferences and differences shouldn’t have mattered so much. In the end, it brought them to this. Destruction. No beauty comes from destruction. Beauty only comes from compromise, and love.

Liam’s eyes open a little and he looks up to Zayn, “Zee?”

“Hey, yeah, Li it’s me hold on, hold on,”

But it’s too late, Liam is fading away. Zayn knows it. His heart pounds and his stomach twists. “I love you Zayn,” Liam says, “I really love you,”

“I know,” Zayn starts to cry, “I love you too. Please don’t leave me. We can live in the country. We can live anywhere. I’ll live right next to you Liam,”

Liam smiles, his eyes rolling back.

His right hand falls from Zayn’s grasp and to the country concrete, where he belongs.

“I’m so sorry,” Zayn pulls Liam into his body and sobs. He sobs so hard until he can’t take it, “Liam!” He screams, “Liam!”
