Dean couldn't believe it. It was already sixth year, and he was sixteen. There was one problem. His best friend, Seamus Finnegan, had been avoiding him at all costs.

Over the summer him and Ginny Weasley had been sending letters back and forth, and were now officially dating. He liked Ginny. He just wasn't sure if he loved her yet. But, as he had never dated before, he assumed that would come with time. What he really didn't understand was how that affected Seamus. The sandy haired boy had been so reclusive Dean feared their friendship might be over, and the very thought chilled him to the bone.

"Dean?" Ginny questioned. They were sitting on the Hogwarts express ready to go to start another year. Her brown eyes, so alike her mother's looked up at him concerned. "Is something bothering you? You've been so quiet." Dean looked around the empty compartment. He chuckled.

"Ginny, are you sure that I'm being quiet? Maybe it's just the empty compartment." Ginny rolled her eyes, the sharpness that was so similar to her mother making itself clear.

"Dean Thomas you knew exactly what I meant! Out with it!"

Dean sighed, he didn't really want to talk about it. "Seamus is not talking to me." Again. He wanted to add, but hesitated. "I-I don't know what it is, it started in early August."

Ginny narrowed her eyes. "That's when we started dating, Dean. Do you think he's jealous of you for getting a girl before him?"

Dean clapped a hand to his forehead. "Yeah, right! I can't believe I didn't see that. Should I go talk to him?"

Ginny laughed, her red locks catching in the sun. "No, you're staying right here Dean. If Seamus is jealous then he'll probably let you know. You do share a dorm with him, wouldn't that be more private?"

Now Dean really wanted to slap himself. His best friend was alone, that's why he was upset. For a while he had had a crush on Lavender Brown, or so Dean had thought. He had tried to ask Seamus to the Yule Ball back in fourth year, only to have Seamus ask Lavender right in front of him. It had been one of the worst days in his life.

"Again, Ginny, your wisdom outshines all. But I do have a question, why are we alone in a compartment? I thought you would want to sit with Harry and Ron."

Ginny's face contorts. "Urgh that idiot? Merlin no, and Harry's nearly as bad. Besides, I don't think Ron or Harry for that matter-although I don't know what it is to him-particularly like that we're together."

"Oh, well it's very nice here alone with you. I just wish I had Seamus to talk to. No offense, but I wish I had a friend in him still that I could talk to." Ginny shook her head.

"Don't be sorry, I understand. You want a friend to lean on, and your best friend is abandoning you. You want him to be there for you, with you. I get it."

No you don't. Thought Dean. I want to be together with him, and not like you think. But he doesn't like me, and so I can't like him.
