y/n's pov
gaten looks at me, and then crumples to a heap.
"sh - gaten!" i cry, and run over to him.
gaten opens his eyes slowly, and gently winks at me.

oh, he's faking.

"gaten, are you alright?" i ask, pretending to sound horrified.

bending over him, i wink back, to let him know i'm onto his plan.
he groans and lifts his head. "whe - what?" he says weakly.

miss caterol looks shocked. "maybe you should go with him, y/n, to help him along. can't have him fainting and bleeding out in the hallway, can we?"

there are several small titters from the class.

"come on," i say, and try to haul him to his feet.

"oy, watch it!" he hisses at me. "take it slowly, god!"
i give him the evil eye, trying to tell him to shut the hell up or i won't help him at all.

by the time he's finally up, i'm feeling distinctly uncomfortable with everyone's eyes on me. i hate being the centre of attention, ugh.
gaten and i limp along slowly until we're out the door, like bizarre contestants in a three-legged race. finally, in the hallway, he let's go of me and laughs. "you've got guts, newbie."

"what?" i question.

"to get out of class on your first day with me."

"you do this a lot, don't you?"

"yep." says gaten, proudly. "biggest prankster in dawkins. that's me."

"that's not saying much, considering it's tiny here."

gaten chuckles. "i like you, y/n. i approve."

"approve of what, exactly?"

"finn's choice."

"why does everyone say that? i'm not a choice, i'm a person. two different things, mate."

talking to gaten in the middle of the hallway is making me feel a little like why did i even do this? what the hell?

"so what was your plan?" i ask him, and he frowns.

"y'know, i never think this far ahead. it kinda depends."

"wow, really? you've got to be joking."

silence again.

"so, new child, why exactly did you come with me?"

"i... don - because that class was boring as hell," i say, trying to pass my confusion off.

it didn't work. gaten moves closer and eyes me suspiciously.
"yeah? what's the real reason?"

i groan, god, was this guy a cop or what?
"i don't know."

"it wasn't because you thought you might see a certain boy by any chance, was it?"

"no!" i snap. "i don't like finn."

"who said i was talking about finn?" asks gaten. "i might talk about caleb, or noah."

"noah? you know what, i don't care. i... don't like finn."

"but -"

"i. don't. like. finn."

"yeah, whatever," says gaten. "but finn said that you were staring at him through the window -"

"i -"

"y/n, stop freaking out! i promise you, i won't tell him. honest."

i give him the evil eye. "yeah, because i'm totally gonna trust a prankster."

"say what you want, i won't tell him. and don't act tough, i know you enjoyed that just now."

i laugh.
maybe the boys here aren't so bad...
