Chapter Thirteen ~ Trust

Dad wasn’t home when I woke up. He left a note saying that he was running some errands. He never tells me much about where he goes or what he does. He was probably getting prepared for our next family while I was out doing the dirty work.

Wherever he was, he wouldn’t be back anytime soon. I got dressed and left the house for my date with Levi.

I met him at the local coffee shop near the beach. He was standing beside his Land Rover, his left leg crossed over his right. Beams of sunlight shone down on his face, outlining his chiseled cheek bones. His jeans hung loosely on his hips, exposing the waistband of his boxers.

He grinned and I grinned back. “Ready to go?” he asked me as I approached him.

I nodded and got into his car. He circled around the car and got into the driver’s seat. As he started up the car, I realized that I was playing with my fingers, a nervous habit. I was nervous, but I knew better than to show it.

He glanced over at me, his gaze lingering for a moment.

            “What?”

Levi shook his head. “Oh nothing, I just like looking at you.”

I blushed. I really couldn’t understand why I felt this way around him.

He pushed the sleeves of his shirt up, cleared his throat, and pulled the car out of its parking spot. My eyes drifted to his arms on the steering wheel and I saw faint white lines running across his wrist. I furrowed my brows and looked at him. “What happened?”

He turned his head to me. “What?”

Levi glanced down to his arm and his forehead creased. He pulled down his sleeves and placed his hands back on the steering wheel. “It’s nothing.”

I leaned over and touched his wrist, tracing the thin marks. I didn’t say anything because I had an idea of what happened. Years ago, I met a girl who was the daughter of a rich CEO. She had the life that I always wanted but she had the saddest eyes and a row of thin white lines on her wrist.

“You don’t have to tell me.”

He pursed his lips and blinked. “I was seventeen. It happened right after I came home from football practice. I had a boyfriend at the time. He was a great guy. He was way older than me so my parents didn’t really approve of him, but I didn’t care. We had only been together for a year or so but he said he really loved me. And I loved him too. He’d always tell me that we’d get married one day and we’d go to an island just to be alone.”
