the little caterpillar

In the tropical rainforest,
The rain patters the rich velvet leaves
The humid humming sticks
And a little caterpillar sits
Chewing green between her teeth
and sighs

This caterpillar, she wishes,
To be beautiful like her sisters
But no matter how much she eats
Or tries
She is still a caterpillar

But she continues on eating
Even when the sun has gone
And the starlight freckles her face
'I must go on' she says
So she can weave a cocoon
And shelter herself from the world

Sleep is a gift to the little caterpillar
The cocoon is warm and hers
And as the weeks go by
The crack begin to show
A caterpillar; she will no longer be

As the sun streaks through the branches
The cocoon unfolds revealing her
The Kaleidoscope gathers
Waiting to welcome their friend

Her head pops out and she spreads her creation
Marvelling in her new found bliss
'Look at me!' she cries, 'I am beautiful now!'
But the butterflies just frown, telling her,
'You always were'

And they laugh, and they dance as one
Through the dense treeline they go
Up into the deep blue sky
Goodbye little caterpillar
