After we put Lady Arabella safely back in her stable, we got into his pick-up and drove to the pasture where the calves had to move away from. Over there the boys were already busy trying to get all the animals in one corner. They all took a horse and chased the herd. Our job was to close the fence once they were all in.
'So what was it we have to do again?' I asked nervously looking at the herd that was coming closer to us.
Jacob chuckled. 'They're calves. They're absolutely harmless.'
'That's easy for you to say,' I said, while putting my hand on my hip. 'You're like six foot five or something.'
He laughed. 'Don't worry. Here they come.'
'Oh my God,' I said. I didn't like it at all. They might've been just babies, but they stood nearly as tall as I did and they really scared the fuck out of me.
'Okay, so now we sneak behind them and close the fence so they can't go back.'
I nodded and started to walk behind him. I tried not to look at them, pretended they weren't there, but when I saw one coming my way, I started to panick.
'It's following me!' I said, nervously.
Jacob turned around and glanced over at the animal. 'He won't hurt you.'
'It's coming right at me. I really don't like this.'
'Just ignore it. They're just very curious. That's all.'
The calf stood still in front of me and looked at me with big brown eyes. He came closer and pressed his nose against my waist. I slowly took a few steps backwards untill I couldn't move any further, because my back was touching the fence.
'It's attacking me!' I screamed, hoping someone would save me.
Jacob laughed, but didn't bother to help me. I really wanted to scream and had no idea how I was going to get myself out of this situation. I stared at the animal with big eyes and when he licked my elbow with his giant tongue, I really freaked out.
'He fucking licked me!' I exclaimed. 'Oh my God, I think I'm going to throw up.'
Jacob turned around and saw me fleeing the animal. 'Joanne don't do that. They'll...' He didn't even bother to finish his sentence, because it was already too late. The moment one of them started to run, the rest of them soon followed resulting in me being chased by at least fifteen of them. At first I didn't notice, because all I could think of was getting away from the one that was licking me, but when I turned around and saw how many of them were behind me, I nearly got a heart attack. I had to get rid of them and the only safe place I could see was on the other side of that god damn fence. Once I finally reached it, I started to climb it and I was so close, but my foot got caught and the next moment I was lying down with my belly flat on the dirty ground.
I groaned. 'Fucking cows.'
Jacob came running to me and nearly died of laughter. His face had turned red and he held his hand on his shaking stomach. 'OMG, this is the funniest thing ever. I'm so sorry, I just...' He couldn't finish his sentence, because he was laughing too hard.
'Don't laugh, you stupid cowboy.'
But saying that only had a reverse effect on him. 'It's just too funny.'
A few of the boys came checking on me as well. 'Don't you ever, ever run away from calves. That will only make things worse.'
I sighed. 'How on earth should I know? The closest I come to a cow is when I'm eating a hamburger.'
They laughed and when Jacob finally was able to breathe again, he finally helped me up and examined the wound on my arm. 'You really collect scars, don't you?'
'Not on purpose,' I said.
'Let's go back to the ranch to take a look at that,' he said with a friendly look on his face. 'Boys, can you handle this yourselves?'
They nodded and drove away on their horses. Jacob and I got up and started to walk back to his pick-up. As we were walking I felt his hand on my back. I looked at him and frowned.
'There was some dust on your back,' he lied.
'Yeah, sure,' I said.
A little bit later I sat on top of the kitchen table, while Jacob was disinfecting the wound on my arm - a situation I had been in before. He was rumbling in his red first aid box and took a large band-aid out of it.
'You want me to do it?'
I nodded and stared into his beautiful blue eyes for a moment. 'But be careful.'
He nodded. 'I will.'
I bit my lip and watched him applying the band-aid very carefully. I could totally see him being a doctor. His fingers slided over the piece of fabric and then touched the bare skin of my upper arm. It gave me goosebumps.
'So, I wanted to ask you something,' he said, keeping his eyes on my arm.
'Okay,' I said. 'Go ahead.'
'I uhm... I was wondering if you'd want to grab some beers at the pub downtown.'
I was quiet for a moment. Thinking of an answer. I knew we were slowly entering dangerous waters; first the horse-riding and now him asking me out, but how could I withstand a date with a super hot cowboy? And it was a nice way to get to know him.
'Yeah, nice,' I said, sounding awfully girly.
'We can go tomorrow, if that's okay for you.'
'Yes, that's fine. It's not like I have anywhere to go.'
He chuckled. 'Nice.'
